The Mormon Youth Chorus and Symphony was disbanded, and the chorus, renamed the Temple Square Chorale, became a training choir for the Tabernacle Choir. The symphony orchestra was reorganized under a new name, the Orchestra at Temple Square. (6)

"194:15-a Lord's Prayer, Silent Individual Reflections and the Pledge of Allegiance in Public Elementary Schools. As a continuation of the policy of teaching our country's history and as an affirmation of the freedom of religion in this country, a school district may authorize the recitation of the traditional Lord's prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the flag in public elementary schools. In addition, a school district may authorize a period of time, after the recitation of the Lord's prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the flag, for silent reflections representative of a pupil's personal religious beliefs. Pupil participation in the recitation of the prayers and pledge of allegiance shall be voluntary. Pupils shall be reminded that the Lord's praye
r is the prayer our
pilgrim fathers recited when they came to this country in their search for freedom. Pupils shall be informed that these exercises are not meant to influence an individual's personal religious beliefs in any manner. The exercises shall be conducted so that pupils shall learn of our great freedoms, which freedoms include the freedom or religion and are symbolized by the recitation of the Lord's prayer and other silent religious reflections." A major revision of the Church Handbook of Instructions is completed. It brings priesthood and auxiliary leader guides together for the first time, into a two volume handbook. Previously, it had been thirty seperate handbooks and publications. (2)

[U.S. Religious History] Judy Poag (D) proposed bill in the Georgia legislature requiring public school districts to display the Ten Commandments. Those who refused to do so would be penalized financially and perhaps even have their state funding cut off. Another bill would permit "student-initiated spoken prayer during the school day." Teachers would be prohibited from " Participating in or actively supervising such prayer." Under this bill, a student could evidently just interrupt class with a prayer and continue the disruption for hours while the teacher would be powerless to stop it. (8)

Overcrowded highways along the Wasatch Front force the governor and Legislature to address raising taxes to pay for rebuilding of I-15 in northern Utah in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics. (1)

Utah celebrates its 100's birthday of Statehood. The year is filled with parades, balls, county histories and other activities to celebrate Utah's entrance into the Union. (1)

[Utah Historical Society] A program manager promotes the use of society collections, while a Utah Centennial Commission is planning a statehood observance and new histories for 1996. The library contains more than 43,000 books, periodicals, pamphlets, and maps as well as 3,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 28,000 photographs, and 3,000 rolls of microfilm. The Utah State History Museum holds 3,500 artifacts and an art collection. (2)

[BYU] Founded in Provo, Utah, in 1875 to provide religion-centered education to Mormon youth in central Utah, Brigham Young University has become the largest church-sponsored university in the United States, with a 1993 winter semester enrollment of 27,985 full-time day students and an additional 3,632 part-time students. Less than a third now come from Utah, and all of the states and more than eighty foreign countries are represented in the cosmopolitan (yet 98 percent Mormon) student body. (3)

[Salt Lake Tribune] Tribune circulation in 1993 stood at 121,165 for the daily edition, and 156,013 on Sunday. The Kearns-Tribune Corporation maintains holdings in other publishing companies, in cable television, and in non-media enterprises, as well. (11)

The First Presidency announced that the 87-year-old Uintah Stake Tabernacle in Vernal, Utah, would be renovated and dedicated as Utah's 10th temple. It was the first existing building to be renovated into a temple. (5)

Four Church-service missionaries entered Hanoi, Vietnam, to give humanitarian service, teaching English to doctors and staff at a children's hospital and to teachers, staff and children at a school for young children. (2)

[U.S. Religious History] In the wake of Bill Clinton's election as president, Jerry Falwell mailed out fund-raising letters asking people to vote on whether he should reactivate the Moral Majority. Later he would refuse to reveal jus how much money he raised, simply telling reporters he has no intention of reactivating his old organization. (3)

[U.S. Religious History] The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) along with the FBI and other federal agents staged a raid the Branch Davidian compound at Waco, Texas. (3)

[U.S. Religious History] The Internal Revenue Service found that money from Jerry Falwell's Old Time Gospel Hour program was illegally diverted to a political action committee. The IRS imposed a $50,000 fine on Falwell and revoked the Old Time Gospel Hour's tax-exempt status for 1986-87. (3)

[U.S. Religious History] Michael Griffin shot and killed Dr. David Gunn in Pensacola, Florida. This was the first murder of an abortion provider by an anti-abortion activist. (3)
