[Utah Coal Mining] An economic setback struck Utah coal in the 1950s and 1960s. It was relieved only when the combination of the Arab oil embargo and the original Clean Air Act in the seventies resulted in coal mine acquisition by energy companies which use coal to generate electricity. (1)

The first non-English-speaking stake of the Church was organized at The Hague in The Netherlands. (2)

Uniform system for teaching investigators introduced as the Church's standard teaching plan at mission presidents' conference in Salt Lake City. (3)

-- During 1961 June-July
A number of significant developments took place that revamped the missionary program. The first seminar for all mission presidents was held June 26-July 27 in Salt Lake City, at which new programs were outlined. Also, a new teaching plan of six lessons to be used in every mission of the Church was officially presented, as was the "every member a missionary" program. The missions of the world were divided into nine areas, and a General Authority was called to administer each area. (2)

[U.S. Religious History] The Christian Broadcasting Network, founded and run by Pat Robertson, began broadcasting over the radio. (6)

Priesthood Correlation program instituted. (3)

Elder Harold B. Lee, under the direction of the First Presidency, announced that all Church programs were to be correlated through the priesthood to strengthen the family and the individual. (7)

The First Presidency inaugurated a three-month series of weekly Sunday evening fireside programs for youth. President David O. McKay addressed an estimated 200,000 youth at the opening fireside, carried by direct telephone wire to 290 stake centers in the United States, western Canada, and Hawaii. (3)

[Harold B. Lee] Organizes the first stake in Europe at Manchester, England. (4)

The First Presidency requested the General Priesthood Committee, with Elder Harold B. Lee of the Quorum of the Twelve as chairman, to make a study of Church programs and curriculum with the object of providing for better "correlation." (3)

[U.S. Religious History] The 100th General Assembly of the Southern Presbyterian Church (PCUS) passed a resolution declaring that sexual relations in the context of marriage but without the intent to conceive children were not sinful. (5)

First Presidency issues statement allowing young men to serve missions at age 19, even though they had not met educational and military qualifications previously required. (3)

[U.S. Religious History] Madalyn Murray (later O'Hair) filed suit in the Baltimore to force the end of required Bible readings and recitations of the Lord's Prayer in public schools. (5)

[BYU] A demonstration Training School and Brigham Young High School were discontinued in the 1960s and the last university-related classes moved to the main campus shortly before Academy Square was sold in 1975. (7)

[Catholic Church in Utah] The writings and radio addresses of Bishop Duane G. Hunt (1884-1960), fifth bishop of the diocese, kept Utah Catholics in the national spotlight. (8)

Also in January, the Church began setting up the administrative framework for a large building program in Europe. By early 1961, administrative building areas outside North America had been established for all parts of the world where the Church existed, and the labor missionary program, which originated in the South Pacific in the early 1950s, was utilized in each area. (3)

[Leonard J. Arrignton] After military service in North Africa and Italy during World War II, he returned to complete a Ph.D. with a dissertation later published in 1958 as Great Basin Kingdom: An Economic History of the Latter-day Saints, 1830-1900. After marrying Grace Fort, Arrington accepted an appointment to teach economics at Utah State University. The couple had three children - James, Carl and Susan (Madsen). Both individually and in collaboration with students and other scholars, Arrington was incredibly prolific in producing historical articles and books. (9)

[U.S. Religious History] Ellery Schempp, protesting the mandatory reading of passages from the Bible in his public school homeroom, decided to read passages from the Koran instead of the Bible; that earned him a trip to the principal's office. He and his family would request help from the American Civil Liberties Union, launching the case of School District of Abington Township v. Schempp. In the end, The Supreme Court ruled that such mandatory religious exercises were unconstitutional. (5)

The Church announced the purchase of Spring Hill in Missouri, known in Church history as Adam-ondi-Ahman. (See D&C 116.). Final deeds for the purchase were dated June 27, 1944, the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. The deed to the land was passed on to the Church by Eugene Johnson, whose family had been in possession of the property for a century. (1)
