[Joseph Smith] Salem, Massachusetts. Joseph Smith received Doctrine & Covenants 111, a revelation concerning his journey to Salem with Sidney Rigdon, his brother Hyrum Smith, and Oliver Cowdery. (1)

[Revelations] Salem, Massachusetts. Doctrine and Covenants 111. Joseph (and companions) to find treasures and converts in Salem. Not to worry about debts or about Zion.
Original in W. W. Phelps journal. Added to the D&C in 1876.
Introduction/.
Joseph's debts/In September [Joseph] would have to pay Charles Holmes the $10,000 he had borrowed in 1831 to set the ill-fated United Order in motion. The $30,000 credit he had obtained in the spring must be met in November. And along with a host of lesser debts, there was the sum of $13,000 still owing on the temple. /No man knows, 192.
Zion problem/September 11, 1836, which Joseph had appointed in 1834 as the day of redemption for Zion, was rapidly approaching. But in July 1836 Governor Dunklin had made it clear that he not act to restore the refugees. They would have to purchase land elsewhere. /D&C 64:11, Joseph to Lyman Wight and others, Aug. 16, 1834, JS personal, 2nd ed. , 347-350; HC 2:144-146. (2)

[Financial] Joseph Smith helps to organize the Kirtland Safety Society in Kirtland, Ohio, a venture undertaken to serve the banking needs of the growing community of Latter-day Saints in Ohio. Technically a joint stock company -- the state of Ohio refused organizers' request to be chartered as a bank -- the society was dramatically weakened by the Panic of 1837 and eventually collapsed. (The Panic of 1837 was a five-year depression that began when New York City banks ended the practice of exchanging bank notes for gold and silver coinage.)
The failure led to resentment and accusations and was a factor in the worsening mob violence that caused Smith to abandon Kirtland in January 1838. (6)
