LDS History, 1887

[David O McKay] Receives patriarchal blessing from John Smith. (1)

[Deseret] Congress denies women in Utah right to vote. (2)

[Deseret] Edmunds-Tucker Act is passed by Congress. (2)

The Edmunds-Tucker Act abolishes women's suffrage, and seizes control of the church and its assets. (3)

[Utah Statehood] Although the Edmunds-Tucker bill was passed by the U.S. Senate on January 12, 1886, it was stalled by Democrats in the House as various amendments to it were considered. When finally approved by both houses in February 1887 and sent to President Cleveland, he allowed it to become law without his signature. Among other things, this act provided that LDS church property in excess of $50,000 would be forfeited to the United States and abolished woman suffrage in the territory. This discouraging news seemed to galvanize Mormons in Utah to continue their pursuit of statehood, but with a somewhat different proposal. On June 30, 1887, another constitutional convention met in Salt Lake City and by July 7 had hammered out a constitution that declared bigamy and polygamy "incompatible with a republican form of government" and made both activities misdemeanors. On August 1 the new constitution was ratified by Utah voters. Many doubted the sincerity of its provisions aga
inst polygamy, and
newspapers across the country editorialized against statehood based on such flimsy evidence of a turnaround of affairs in Utah. The new constitution was not automatically set aside by Congress, which held hearings on it in 1888, but ultimately it too failed to achieve the desired result for Utah. With the Mormon hierarchy determined to retain polygamy as a tenet and a practice, some members of Congress began agitating for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban the practice. (4)

On Saturday, May 2, 1885, Mormons held a mass meeting in the Salt Lake Tabernacle to protest the heavy hand of federal authorities. Those in attendance framed a "Declaration of Grievances and Protest" and chose a delegation to carry the document to the president. Origin of famous Mormon couplet

A recent publication provides information from Brigham Young shedding light on the origin of a foundational teaching of the LDS Church.

As man now is, God once was;
as God now is, man may become

So declared Lorenzo Snow, fifth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since this pronouncement on Sept. 18, 1898 the couplet has been quoted hundreds of times by LDS general authorities and instructors to summarize the Mormon concept of "eternal progression."

...

However Mormon Church President Brigham Young stated in 1849 "Lorenzo Snow put out some principles arguing that Jesus Christ is our father and not our elder brother and asked for light." Brigham Young replied to Lorenzo Snow:

While on a mission to England, the following came forcibly to my mind - As God was, so are we now; as he now is, so we shall be.

-- Jan 8, 1882
Assembly Hall on Temple Square dedicated. (4)

-- Feb 16, 1882
[Utah Statehood] the U.S. Senate passed the Edmunds Act, and it was approved in the House on March 14 and soon signed by Chester A. Arthur. It made the offense of unlawful cohabitation much easier to prove than polygamy misdemeanor and made it illegal for polygamists or cohabitants to vote, hold public office, or serve on juries. It also provided for a five-man Utah Commission appointed by the president to supervise all aspects of the electoral process in Utah Territory. Against this background Utahns nevertheless decided to mount another statehood drive. A constitutional convention authorized by the legislature met during April 10-27, 1882, in Salt Lake City and framed a constitution for Utah, abandoning the name Deseret and retooling the document. On May 22 the constitution was ratified by a vote of the people. Although a delegation was dispatched to Washington with the new constitution to present to Congress, no action was taken on the matter until February 23, 1883, when
it was introduced in the Senate; a statehood bill was later introduced in the House, but both bills were referred to committees where they were quickly put on hold. (5)

-- Feb 25, 1882
After a bitter dispute between George Q. Cannon (who won a decisive victory) and Liberal Party candidate Allen G. Campbell over who was allowed to represent Utah territory in the House of Representatives, both are denied the position. George Q. Cannon's practice of polygamy was the deciding issue and re-sparks national controversy on the topic. (6)

-- Mar 22, 1882
Edmunds bill signed into law by President Chester A. Arthur. [See Antipolygamy Legislation.] (7)

Edmunds Act signed into law. (4)

[U.S. Religious History] Polygamy was outlawed by Congress, specifically targeting the practices of the Mormon church. (8)

-- Mar 23, 1882
The Edmunds Act declares polygamy a felony. The act not only reinforces the 1862 Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act but also revokes the right of polygamists to vote, disallows them from holding political office, and also makes them ineligible to serve on the jury, regardless of whether they are practicing or merely believe in it. All elected offices in the Utah Territory were vacated, an election board was formed to issue certificates to those who denied polygamy and did not practice it, and new elections were held territory-wide. Practicing polygamists would have their civil rights taken away without a trial or due process. Adulterers and fornicators had no such penalties applied and did not lose their rights. (6)

-- During 1882 March
[Apostle John Henry Smith] Goes to Washington, D.C., to work against passage of the Edmunds Bill by the House of Representatives. (9)

-- Jul 17, 1882

U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of antipolygamy legislation in the George Reynolds case. (8)

In the first case before the Supreme Court regarding the first amendment, the court upholds the 1862 Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act banning plural marriage in Reynolds v. United States. George Q. Cannon, representative of the territory, states concerning this decision:+"Our crime has been: We married women instead of seducing them; we reared children instead of destroying them; we desired to exclude from the land prostitution, bastardy and infanticide. If George Reynolds [the man who was convicted of committing bigamy] is to be punished, let the world know the facts . . . . Let it be published to the four corners of the earth that in this land of liberty, the most blessed and glorious upon which the sun shines, the law is swiftly invoked to punish religion, but justice goes limping and blindfolded in pursuit of crime."
