Behave as though this were a permanent settlement until the Lord directs otherwise. This is a church-wide policy. Eternal life promised to participants.

Jesus now rigns in heaven, will return soon, but no one knows when. Unknown holy men. Christ will not return as a woman. Marriage is ordained of God (one wife) for procreation. Be equal in all. Lamanites to blossom as the rose and Zion flourish upon the hills. (1)

[Revelations] Kirtland, Ohio. Doctrine and Covenants 42:1-73 Sources. Short missions. The New Jerusalem. Only those ordained by recognized authorities may preach -from the Bible and Book of Mormon. Do not teach without the spirit. Speak and prophecy as the Comforter directs. Cast out the unrepentant. Consecrate property to the Lord. The bishop returns what the family needs. Keep the rest in the Lord's storehouse for the poor and needy. Do not return consecrated property excommunicants. Bless the sick. Do not mention Bible translation until complete. The kingdom is the keys of the church. Do not go in debt to the world unless commanded [dropped in 1835].

[Revelations] Kirtland, Ohio. Doctrine and Covenants 43. Joseph is the Lord's only authorized spokesman. If he falls, only he can name his successor. Uphold him and furnish what he needs. Day of the Lord is near. Last opportunity for the world to repent. Satan will be bound, then loosed for a season before the end. Righteous to be changed in the twinkling of an eye.
John Whitmer's version is consistent with the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants except for a few words noted in the annotation column. His version may have been written before or after 1835, but certainly after the Book of Commandments (1833).

Consecrated property not to be returned to excommunicants. Elders bless the sick. Treatment of adulterers and murderers, turn criminals and liars over to civil authorities. Reconcile with members privately , elders court if needed. Public reprimands for public offenses.
"On the 9th of February, 1831, at Kirtland, in the presence of twelve elders, and according to the promise heretofore made the Lord gave the following revelation, embracing the law of the church. " Manuscript History of the Church, A-1, 95. [Follows 1835 D&C 13. ].
This section, known as "The Law" or "The Laws of the Church," consists of two revelations. Verses 1-72 were received February 9, 1831; verses 78-93, February 23, 1831. Verses 73-77 were added when the two revelations were combined in 1835 Doctrine and Covenants 13.

[Revelations] Fayette, New York. Doctrine and Covenants 34. Orson Pratt (h1) is blessed for believing. He is called to preach the gospel, preparing the way for the second coming. Catastrophic events and destruction of the wicked. Orson is to prophesy by the power of the Holy Ghost.
Orson was baptized on his nineteenth birthday, September 19, 1830. In October he traveled west to visit Joseph in Fayette, New York, and on November 4, the prophet gave him this revelation. Received through a seer stone in a hat. Recorded by John Whitmer. See Joseph Smith Revelations, 94n94.

John the Baptist, in the spirit of Elias, ordained Joseph and Oliver to the first priesthood ; Elijah committed the keys of the turning of hearts. Promises remain by virtue of the patriarchs. Peter, James, and John ordained you apostles. I have given you keys of the last dispensation. Put on the armor of God.
When Newel and Sally Knight visit Joseph and Emma Smith and John Whitmer in Harmony, Joseph goes out to buy wine for the sacrament and receives this revelation not to purchase it from enemies.
D&C 27 is a combination of two revelations. The first (vss. 1-5, 14-15 of the current version) discusses the elements to be used in the sacrament. It was first published after the Articles and Covenants in "Mormon Creed," PT, April 19, 1831. No date is provided for the revelation.
The second and third published versions of the first revelation ("Revelations. / A Commandment Given, September 4, 1830," EMS 1, no. 10 (Mar. 1833): {6}; and BC 28-date the revelation September 4, 1830. The date given in the 1834-1836 History, 51, is August 1830.
The second revelation (date unknown), dealing with the keys of the priesthood, was not published until the 1851 Pearl of Great Price (Robert J. Woodford, "Historical Development of the Doctrine and Covenants," Dissertation. BYU, 1974, 398). Later it was combined with the first revelation.

Joseph became entangled in sin, repented and was visited by angel who gave him power to translate Book of Mormon. We, the elders, heard and bear witness to the words of the Lord. God is all power, understanding, through transgression man becomes devilish. The Only Begotten. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one. Justification and sanctification. Qualifications for baptism. Duties of apostle/elder , priest , teacher. Ordination according to gifts of candidate , licenses. Years of accountability. Procedures and prayers for baptism and sacrament. Conferences, membership rolls.
This section has the most complicated history of all sections in the Doctrine and Covenants. In the second half of 1829, Oliver Cowdery writes out a revelation, known as "the articles of the Church of Christ," which provides directions for running the church. It draws on wording from D&C 17, June 14-30, and D&C 18, June 1-14, 1830. The first conference of the church, on June 9, 1830, ratifies the Articles and Covenants of the Church of Christ, presumably prepared by Joseph Smith. In the spring of 1831, Martin Harris sends a copy of this document to Painesville Telegraph editor and publisher, E. B. Howe, who publishes it under the headline, "The Mormon Creed. " The church publishes it in the Evening and Morning Star in 1832 and then again in 1834 due to certain "errors" in the previous release. It is published as Book of Commandments 24. Most changes were made for the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants. Robert J. Woodford's dissertation, "The Historical Development of the Doctrine a

Excerpts of Church acquisition likely belonged to Prophet's mother by R. Scott Lloyd

A rare 1841 copy of the Book of Mormon that likely belonged to Lucy Mack Smith, mother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, is now owned by the Church, the gift of a Church member who wishes to remain anonymous.

Elder Marlin K. Jensen of the Seventy, Church Historian and Recorder, displayed the book during a recent Church News interview in his office.

At the same time, he displayed a portrait of the Prophet's mother by Sutcliffe Maudsley, a Nauvoo, Ill., artist, likely done in 1842 ,in which she is holding a Book of Mormon copy virtually identical to the recent acquisition by the Church.

"The provenance indicates that it's Lucy's book," Elder Jensen said, "and it's likely this is the very Book of Mormon that she was holding in this painting."

It was the fourth edition of the Book of Mormon, the previous ones being the original, published in Palmyra, N.Y., in 1830, the 1837 edition published in Kirtland, Ohio, and the 1840 edition published in Nauvoo.

Of such historical artifacts, Elder Jensen said, "They help promote faith, and they preserve a record. There is something spiritually beneficial about having that memory. There's no church for which history is more important than ours, because we rise or fall with it. And with that history comes the development of our doctrine, comes our authority and the authenticity of it."
