[Joseph Smith] Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith gave instructions concerning a financial institution known as the Kirtland Safety Society, which were later published in the Church periodical Messenger and Advocate. (7)

[Lucy Mack Smith] The first Kirtland Safety Society banknotes begin circulating; redemption in specie stops 23 January. By 1 February the notes are discounted at one bit (12.5 cents) on the dollar. (5)
