[Second Counselor John Henry Smith [father] Diary] Salt Lake City

My son George Alberts wife Lucy W. Smith underwent an operation at the hands of Dr. Middleton to day in the L.D.S. Hospital. (1)

-- March 28, 1911; Tuesday
I attended a special meeting of the Twelve held in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 2.30 P.M. at which there were present Pres[ident] Francis M. Lyman, Elders Heber J. Grant, Hyrum M. Smith, Cha[rle]s. W. Penrose, Geo[rge]. F. Richards, Orson F. Whitney, David O. McKay, Anthony W. Ivins and Joseph F[ielding]. Smith Jr. Elder Geo[rge] Albert Smith was also with us for a short time but on account of his poor health was excused early.

We discussed the merits and demerits in Bro[ther]. John W. Taylor's case heard some weeks before. The final action taken and made unanimous by unanimous vote was excommunication for insubordination to the Church and the di[s]cipline thereof. It was shown that he had threatened the lives of two of the Apostles, F[rancis]. M. L[yman]. & J[ohn]. H[enry]. S[mith]. He had cursed one of the Apostles who has been sick for about two years [i.e., George Albert Smith] and attributed his sickness to that cause. He had disclosed and made improper use of a purported revelation of his father, Pres[ident]. John Taylor to the comfort of those who were opposed to the Church action in discontinuing the practice of plural marriage in the Church. He had characterized the action of the Church Authorities in relieving B[isho]p. Robinson of Colonia Dublan [Mexico] of his bishopric or presidency over the ward as one of the most unjust and unrighteous acts ever committed. He had confessed to having
authorized an elderly man a Patriarch (Wolf) of Canada to marry people in plural marriage. He confessed to having him self performed such marriages since the Manifesto. He would not deny that he had recently taken a plural wife but claimed that his rights were being encroached upon when we demand him to answer thus incriminating himself. He did not propose to make answers before this body of men that might incriminate him before the law. He had said he wanted nothing to do with any of the Twelve. Tho[ugh]t if to go to heaven meant to be associated with these he preferred to not go there or words to that effect. He had been dropped from the Council of the Twelve five years ago because he was out of harmony with the First Presidency and the Twelve but had never done anything to put himself in harmony since but on the contrary had lent comfort to the enemy and had not tried to influence others to be quieted and sustain the Presidency. He told us in council that we could take it
for granted he had a new plural wife. We need not go to the trouble to hunt up evidence, that we could do in his case as we deemed best, that he did not care. I called on Pres[ident] Lyman in the early eve and he told me he had presented to the First Presidency our decision in the J[ohn]. W. Taylor case and our action and that the President said he did not see how we could have done less. (2)

Quorum of Twelve Apostles excommunicates John W. Taylor for marrying plural wife in 1909 and for justifying it by 1886 revelation. His is last excommunication of general authority appointed in nineteenth century and first excommunication of general authority with service in twentieth century. (3)

[Quorum of Twelve] Twelve vote as compromise to deprive Matthias F. Cowley of right to exercise priesthood but not disfellowship him. This resolves two-day deadlock in which seven apostles want to give him no punishment, whereas quorum president Francis M. Lyman and two others what to disfellowship Cowley for performing plural marriage up to 1905 resignation. Cowley regards this as second punishment (double jeopardy) he has received for same acts., which he insists he did by authorization of First Presidency. (5)

George Albert Smith, Feb 22, 1911

-- Feb 22, 1911
Trial of John W. Taylor before the Quorum of Apostles for some of his post-manifesto plural marriage activities. In his defense Taylor has read aloud and entered into the minutes the Sept. 27, 1886 revelation given to his father, President John Taylor. The revelation is discussed. Apostle Joseph Fielding Smith states that a he, himself, as placed the original of the revelation in the church archives. However, Heber J. Grant, who is present and participated during the trial, later, as president of the church, publicly denies the existence of this revelation claiming there is no knowledge or record of it in the church. During the trial Taylor asks that President Joseph F. Smith be called in on his behalf but the council refuses to contact President Smith. The Apostles formally excommunicate Taylor on Mar 28. (1)

-- March 1, 1911; Wednesday
Minutes of a meeting of the Council of the Twelve, held March 1st, 1911, at 10 A.M. ... [Questioning of John W. Taylor]

H[eber]. J. Grant: I heard I don't know whether it is true or not, that you had in the name of the Lord cursed George Albert Smith?

J[ohn]. W. Taylor: No sir. I think I told Brother Ivins that if George Albert Smith did not stop talking against me, I would make him suffer the next time I met him and the curse of the Lord would rest upon him. The covenant of my brethren of the Apostles when I left them was that they would not talk against me and my family. Brother Taylor related in brief the circumstances connected with his leaving the Council of the Apostles.

C[harles]. W. Penrose: Have you ever heard any of the brethren of the Twelve say anything against you?

J[ohn]. W. Taylor: No I never meet them or with the people in their meetings. I have been ostracised and treated worse than an outsider, none of you have ever invited me to your homes and of course I have never invited you much with the exception of my daughter's wedding. I told John Henry Smith that his son was talking against me and if he did not stop talking the curse of God would rest upon him and I told Brother Ivins if George Albert didn't stop he would have to answer to me the first time I met him. I regard my covenants as sacred and expect the brethren to do the same. If this is the kind of blessing you get for doing what you consider right, it is a pretty poor reward.

... A[nthony]. W. Ivins: I would like to ask for my own information what George Albert Smith has said against Brother Taylor as I may be guilty of this same breach. The feeling has been prevalent in Mexico particularly that Brothers Taylor and Cowley were deposed for political reasons only and I have taken the view, although not present, that it was because they were out of harmony.

H[eber]. J. Grant expressed his view of the matter.

... Brother Taylor was excused. The Brethren spent some time considering the case of Brother Taylor, his attitude and expressions both before this Council and to others and to members of the Council individually, and President Lyman presented the following:

Brother Taylor admitted of wrongs in Canada and Davis county [Utah]. He tactically admits his late marriage with his typewriter.

He has cursed and threatened his brethren. He has put out a purported revelation of his father's which his father never presented to the Church nor his brethren. His construction upon it is very mischievous and against the position and discipline of the Church by the living oracles. It was in his power to have restrained Brothers Cowley and Woodruff, but instead his course lent encouragement to them. He has had no change of heart since he resigned his position in the Council. He has not met us in a friendly and penitent spirit. He blames us instead of himself for his troubles. He said he never wants to be associated with the Twelve in time or eternity. When his brethren reported his cursing of George Albert Smith, he said they were liars. The action of the stake Presidency and High Council in the case of Bishop Robinson he denounced as the damndest outrage ever perpetrated. In a threatening manner he tells us of the awful things that would happen to the Church if he should
open his mouth and tell what he knows. He greatly admires Henry S. Tanner and Nathan Clark who we have fou[n]d unsafe men. His examples and words give comfort and encouragement to those inclined to override the discipline of the Church. (2)

Taylor is summoned by the Quorum of Apostles: "By these presents you are summoned to appear before the Council of the Twelve Apostles in the Salt Lake Temple at 10 A.M. on Wednesday February 22, 1911, to vindicate yourself of the claim entertained by your brethren that you have married a plural wife within the last six years contrary to the discipline of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that you have aided and encouraged others to enter such a relationship. You will also be required to answer any and all questions that may be put to you by the Council upon these points, to tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Do not fail to appear as we shall be in session there and then to receive you." (3)

Former apostle John W. Taylor comes into Apostle John Henry Smith's office "very much angered at president Francis M. Lyman and the Twelve. . . . He demanded an Interview with Pres[iden]t Joseph F. [Smith] and me. He was quite wild. He staid over two hours. . . . He demanded that President J. F. Smith call the Counsel of fifty to protect him from the Twelve in his violations of the law [for polygamy]." On Mar 28, 1911 John W. Taylor is excommunicated. At his excommunication trial (conducted by the Quorum of Twelve) he asks that President Joseph F. Smith be called on his behalf but the Quorum refuses. (3)

George Albert Smith condemned John W. Taylor's 1909 plural marriage... apparently suggested that this was adultery. For this, John W. Taylor threatened to kill him, but instead cursed him by the Priesthood. ... [Later,] John W. Taylor said that nervous breakdown from 1909 to 1911 was the result of that curse. (4)

At general conference, Apostle George Albert Smith stops speaking after three minutes as he begins to "tremble and perspire." Apostle Reed Smoot referred two weeks earlier to Smith's "mental trouble." Since Jan Smith's diary has described symptoms of his eventual collapse. At age thirty-nine he is first general authority whose debilitating mental problems cannot be attributed to senility. Hospitalized for ten weeks at Gray's Sanitarium in Salt Lake City, Smith does not recover from this emotional breakdown until 1913. Problem re-emerges in 1930's and in 1949-51. (1)

-- During 1909
(George Albert Smith) From 1909 until 1913 George Albert Smith suffered what Reed Smoot called "mental trouble," and a recent biographer termed "mental collapse." He seemed to recover until the 1930s, when further complications developed. Throughout his service as a general authority after 1909, particularly as Church president, his associates did their best to limit demands upon him that might trigger a relapse. Recovering in the winter of 1909-10, he "became so weak as to be scarcely able to move. It was a slow and exhausting effort for me even to turn over in bed. One day under these conditions, I lost consciousness of my surroundings and thought I had passed to the Other Side. I found myself standing with my back to a large and beautiful lake, facing a great forest of trees.

Through the forest, I saw a man coming towards me. … I recognized him as my grandfather [George [Albert] Smith]. … He looked at me very earnestly and said: 'I would like to know what you have done with my name.' Everything I had ever done passed before me as though it were a flying picture on a screenâ€"everything I had done. … I smiled and looked at my grandfather and said: 'I have never done anything with your name of which you need be ashamed.'" The regular ten o'clock meeting of the First Presidency and Apostles was held as usual this morning in the Temple.... A letter was read from Brother M[ahonri]. M. Young, dated 23rd inst., stating that according to his calculations it would take him about a year to mould a life size figure of the Prophet Joseph [Smith], and that there would be considerable expense attached to the work, and he thought $150 a month for the twelve months would be a fair wage to pay him; and if it should take more than a year to do the work, it would be at his own expense; and if on completion the figure shall be satisfactory, and is to be cast in bronze, he would be willing to leave the matter of any further compensation to the Presidency.

This not being entirely satisfactory, a committee was appointed consisting of Brothers Clawson and George Albert Smith to wait on Brother Young for the purpose of obtaining from him a definite statement, thereby avoiding any misunderstanding hereafter. ... (2)

The regular meeting of the First Presidency and Twelve Apostles was held at 10 o'clock this morning at the Temple....

Bro[ther]. George Albert Smith reported that Brother Smoot and he went to Rexburg, Fremont [Idaho] Stake, where they met the Stake Presidency and the Bishopric of Marysville, and found that the difficulty existed between the Stake Presidency and Bishopric of Marysville and the people of Vernon Ward. Ashton, he said, is settling very rapidly as a railroad town, and is situated one and a half miles from Vernon, and it seems that the railroad people missed Marysville intentionally, and the people feel very much hurt about it. Evidently the Bishop of Marysville has felt very much exercised over it, and has acted somewhat unwisely in consequence, in having failed to go and see Pres[iden]t. Basset in regard to the matter. Bro[ther]s. Smith and Smoot met with the brethren named and the Bishop of Vernon, and visited Ashton and

Vernon Tuesday. They talked plainly to these brethren on account of their unfounded suspicions in regard to the Stake Presidency, and left them to settle their difficulties. ... (2)

Present: Pres[iden]ts. [Joseph F.] Smith, [John R.] Winder and [Anthon H.] Lund, Elders Francis M. Lyman, John Henry Smith, George Teasdale, Heber J. Grant, Rudger Clawson, Reed Smoot, Hyrum M. Smith, George Albert Smith, George F. Richards, Orson F. Whitney, David O. McKay and the Patriarch. ...

The question of accepting the proposition of M[ahonri]. M. Young, partly considered a few weeks ago, was now brought to the attention of the council said proposition in substance as follows. To execute a life size statue of the Prophet Joseph Smith, case in plaster, for the net sum of three thousand dollars, to be paid at the rate of $150. a month for twelve months, at the end of which time, if the work be not completed, he to finish same without further expense to the Church; but on completion, if approved and accepted, he to receive the additional sum of $1,200.00. He also to superintend casting in bronze, and deliver same in place in Salt Lake City, said bronze cast to cost approximately from $1,200 to $1,500; not to exceed $1,500. If plaster model should not be accepted, it is to become the property of the Church with the understanding that it shall not be cast in bronze. If plaster case is completed and submitted in less than twelve months, but not approved, the monthly
payments to cease, and cast to become property of church with the understanding that it will not be bronzed. It is also understood that Brother M[ahonri]. M. Young is to bear his own expenses to the east and return while supervising the casting in bronze and delivering same in place at Salt Lake City, and that he furnish at his own expense the material for the proposed statue.

It was unanimously decided to accept the proposition. ... (2)

George Albert Smith, February 9, 1906; Friday

-- February 9, 1906; Friday
I believe Reed [Smoot] will go through all right but from the spirit here [in Washington, D.C.] the fight later on the Church will become intense. On the ground that we have conived at or actually taken part in later [plural] marriages. Reed has talked to no one but [George] Sutherland in regard to the [John W.] Taylor [Matthias F.] Cowely situation. Reed and most of the brethren object to my talking to the Senators. Your mother and I called upon the President he received us warmly, but only shook hands and said a few kind works to each other.

I feel certain that our only danger lies in the fact we have not cut [apostles] Cowley and Taylor right off of the church. These men demand that we do something heroic. They say that if we cant and wont act they will finish the matter completely by our disfranchisement. (1)

-- February 20, 1906; Tuesday
Since writing a few lines to you Bro[ther]. [Reed] Smoot has introduced me to some of my old friends and I have had some very pleasant conversations. They all seem to feel that we must do something to convince the public and also the Senators that we are not coniving in these later cases [of plural marriages]. One man [i.e., Theodore Roosevelt] told me that [John W.] Taylor [Matthias F.] Cowley and [Joseph M.] Tanner must be disciplined by the Church, not cast out but drooped [sic] from their positions, and that it must be done at a conference. George Albert Smith, January 4, 1906; Thursday

-- January 4, 1906; Thursday
The regular meeting of the First Presidency and Twelve Apostles was held this morning in the temple.... Brother Charles W. Penrose reported the visit of President Smith and party to Vermont and return, briefly as follows:

Speaking for himself the said he appreciated very highly the great pleasure it had afforded him to accompany President Smith

and party to the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith, to witness and take part in the dedication services of the monument erected to the memory of the Prophet Joseph. A splendid spirit prevailed during these services, and a great number of people came from the country round about more people in fact than the house could accommodate; so a meeting was held at the monument at the same time; and the services in the house after the memorial services were very enjoyable indeed. At night a meeting was held at South Royalton, in Willard's hall, which was tendered by the people. This was a very fine meeting on Sunday and spent Christmas day. From Boston [Massachusetts] they went to Palmyra [New York], where they visited the house where part of the Book of Mormon was translated, and here they visited the grove, which is said to be the place where the Father and Son appeared to the Prophet Joseph. The party sung a hymn here. They visited the Hill Cumorah, from which place a most exc
ellent view of the country round is afforded. The party of course was reminded of the great and final battle of the Jaredites which took place around this hill, and later between the Lamanites and Nephites, and as souvenirs some of them brought flint arrow heads, which are continually being gathered now and sold as souvenirs. Prayer was offered on the hill and the site was pointed out as near as possible where the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated were concealed. President Smith offered the prayer, but much to the regret of all it was not reported. This property belongs to the estate of the late Admiral Sampson. From the hill they went to the cottage occupied by the brother of the late Admiral, where they purchased the arrowheads. They also went to Palmyra and saw the press on which the first edition of the Book of Mormon was printed, and they also went to the office of Mr. P[liny]. T. Sexton, where they saw printed sheets of a copy of the first edition of
the Book of Mormon. From visiting the hill Cumorah their next trip was to Kirtland [Ohio], where they visited the temple. They were conducted through the building by a man named Greed, one of the Apostles of the Reorganized Church. They took dinner at Willoughby, the nearest town to Kirtland, afterwards they went to Chicago [Illinois], from which place they went to Kanosha [Wisonsin], in response to an invitation of the Bain Wagon people to visit their works at that place; and they also visited the Racine-Sattley Carriage Works, and the offices of the J.J. Gas Works. They also visited the Automobile works of the Jeffreys Co[mpany]., where they were also shown courtesies. At Chicago next day some of the party visited the Swift Stockyards. While President Smith and others dined with Mr. Calahan, Passenger Agent of the Nickel Plate Railroad. At Chicago they held a very fine meeting in our own chapel. Large congregation, good discourses. The return trip was very enjoyable, as wa
s also the going trip. They wound up the trip on New Year's eve by a testimony meeting, at which all present spoke. The spirit of the Lord attended them on the whole trip, and everything was done to promote the happiness of each other. All had a good time and a good rest, and he believed great good would result from it. He believed that seeds were sown which will bear fruit in a day nor far distant. they all felt greatly indebted to Brother George Albert Smith for

his personal attentions and the successful way in which he managed the affairs of the party, and resolutions of thanks were passed to him, also to Mr. W. H. Bancroft, through whose efforts they obtained the private car they occupied, for the kindness and courtesy shown the party.

Brother George Albert Smith said, in addition to what had been said, literature, containing pamphlets, views and books were taken with them for free distribution, some of which were distributed en route at various points where they stopped, and the balance left at the cottage to be distributed there to friends who may visit the monument..... Resignations are held in reserve unless considered necessary to save church from U.S. constitutional amendment or to save Apostle Reed Smoot from expulsion from U.S. Senate. (1)
