The history of Z.C.M.I, Jan 30, 1891

-- Jan 30, 1891
[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] After some little discussion it was decided that it will be best for Z.C.M.I. and other corporations to cease paying tithing on their earnings but leave the stockholders to pay from their dividends. The custom, however, of deducting the tithing from the wages of employees was not discontinued. It was thought proper in some instances to induce eastern Gentiles of respectability to take stock with us in some of our large corporations. They would thus feel interested in protecting us in case of attack on our institutions. It was reported that there are many thieves working in Z.C.M.I. whose thefts have been discovered. Whether to make public examples of them or merely discharge them, was referred to the Board of Directors. (1)

-- Wednesday, Apr 9, 1890
[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] Very nice day. From 7 a.m. till 10 o'clock I was busy at the office looking over the mail and attending to other matters of business. At the latter time I went to the Historian's office where all the brethren met who were present last evening. After the singing of two hymns and prayer Pres. Snow arose and expressed his pleasure at our fasting (which we all did this morning) and our meeting. He said: Everyone of us who has not already had the experience must yet meet it of being tested in every place where we are weak, and even our lives must be laid on the altar. Brigham Young was once tried to the very utmost by the Prophet, and for a moment his standing in the Church seemed to tremble in the balance. Wm. Smith, one of the first quorum of apostles in this age had been guilty of adultery and many other sins. The Prophet Joseph instructed Brigham (then the Pres. Of the Twelve) to prefer a charge against the sinner, which was done. Before the
time set for the trial, however, Emma Smith talked to Joseph and said the charge preferred against William was with a view to injuring the Smith family. After the trial had begun, Joseph entered the room and was given a seat. The testimony of witnesses concerning the culprit's sins was then continued. After a short time Joseph arose filled with wrath and said, "Bro. Brigham, I will not listen to this abuse of my family a minute longer. I will wade in blood up to my knees before I will do it." This was a supreme moment. A rupture between the two greatest men on earth seemed imminent. But Brigham Young was equal to the danger, and he instantly said, "Bro. Joseph, I withdraw the charge." Thus the angry passions were instantly stilled. John Taylor also was similarly tested by the then Pres. B. Young at the time the St. George temple was dedicated. The United Order was then a favorite theme of Pres. Young, but in his views John Taylor did not fully coincide. Because of this the
latter was most terribly scourged by the tongue of Pres. Young in the temple before all the people. Bro. Taylor was then President of the Twelve. It looked for a time as though these two great men would separate in anger, for Pres. Y. had forbidden John to travel through Kanab and Panguitch Stakes and organize them with Bro. L. Snow, as had been intended, and said he had better return home and make wagons until he knew what was right. Bro. Snow saw the danger and knew the disposition of the two men. He therefore visited Pres. Taylor and after considerable argument induced him to go and visit Pres. Young. They were coolly received at the latter's house, but as soon as Pres. Taylor said, "Bro. Brigham, if I have done or said anything wrong I desire to make it right," every feeling of anger vanished and these two men were reconciled. Thus the Lord will try us wherever we seem to be strong and those who today seem to be very prosperous financially may meet constant reverses unti
l they will be forced to acknowledge that in and of themselves they are nothing. Thus it becomes us to be humble in every particular. Apostle F. D. Richards spoke next. He said: When some of the brethren in Nauvoo were sent out to collect funds for the building of the temple part of their collections stuck to their fingers. Because of this Bro. Joseph said he thought it best to put the brethren under bonds to make correct returns and this plan would be commenced with the apostles. Bro. Brigham arose and said he did not propose to be thus treated. If the brethren could not trust him he would not go out to collect. Nothing further was said in this forenoon meeting concerning the subject, but in the afternoon when the assembly again met Bro. Brigham took a seat in the congregation. Bro. Joseph after going on the stand looked about and not seeing Bro. Y. in his accustomed places inquired for him. On being told that he was seated below, the Prophet called out, "Oh, Brother Brigh
am, come up here; we want you." Improper feelings were soon allayed, and the brethren were sent out under bonds, Bro. Brigham among the rest. Bro. Richards reported his feelings and condition. He had been married to 10 wives, one of whom has left him. He is not wealthy but in comfortable circumstances. His love for the brethren is very great. Apostle Moses Thatcher felt well in the work and desired to be pardoned for any offense he had ever given to the brethren. He feels that the great danger to this people lies in the accumulation of wealth in their disunited condition. To the people it looks as though the authorities were divided in business matters, for they stand at the head of rival businesses. For his part, he would be glad to be relieved of all business responsibility and lay his property at the feet of the apostles. Bro. F. M. Lyman was the next speaker; he felt that he had failed in many particulars to do as he ought, but he desired to improve. He had felt very a
nxious to do something for his father who had died out of the Church. He had labored very hard and for years before he succeeded in releasing his own mother from the errors into which she had fallen by the teaching of his father in regard to Spiritualism. Now, however, he had succeeded in winning nearly all the family back to the Church. He wept in talking of his father. At this juncture Pres. Snow arose and said he had been thinking last night before retiring as to the condition of Amasa Lyman, and he felt convinced in his own mind that he would be permitted to associate with the Prophet Joseph to whom he was a true and devoted friend during his life. Of course, he would be required to pay the penalty for his sins, but this being done he would be rewarded for his good deeds. When Bro. Lyman completed his remarks it was 2:15 p.m. Bros. Thatcher and Grant were now excused to attend a Z.C.M.I. directors meeting, which occupied 1 1/4 hours. The remainder of us stopped in the ro
om. When these brethren returned we clothed in our robes and F. D. Richards prayed as we knelt and Pres. Snow at the altar. We then dressed in our usual clothing and prepared to eat the Lord's Supper in the same manner in which the Prophet Joseph said it was eaten by the Savior and His disciples at Jerusalem, and as Joseph and the brethren did occasionally at Nauvoo; we had several loaves of bread and bottles of wine. The former was broken and we ate and drank till we were fully satisfied. I took a very small quantity of wine. About 5 p.m. our speaking was resumed. Bro. John Henry Smith and Heber J. Grant each spoke concerning their financial and family affairs and expressed their love for the members of the quorum. It now being 7 p.m., an hour's intermission was taken for exercise. When we again convened Bro. Merrill spoke second. He related how wonderfully God had preserved and guided him in youth and watched over his advancing years, so that he was able to remain as the o
nly representative of his stock in the Church. John W. Taylor spoke first; he related how he received a testimony of the divinity of the work while engaged at his father's saw mill some years since in Summit County. In a vision he saw the place where he had been at work cutting logs gradually lit up by a brilliant light which seemed to emanate from the east. This light continued to increase in intensity and with the increase he seemed to be pushed further away from its source. Finally he clasped his arms around the stump of a tree for the purpose of keeping himself in position. He saw the Son of God appear in the brilliancy of the light and then his hold upon the stump began to slip and he knew that should he release his grasp he would be thrust back with such violence that he would be dashed to pieces. As he was holding with grim desperation, he awoke. His father told him that the interpretation of the dream was that the bright light was the truth which would banish all tru
th haters from before it, and the tree stump to which he was holding was a similar representation to that of the rod of iron in the Book of Mormon. Bros Taylor related several other manifestations of God's goodness to him in answer to his prayers. Bro. Anton H. Lund told how he
joined the Church when a mere child and was sent out to preach and distribute tracts when 13 years of age. He labored thus as a missionary for 5 years before emigrating. One day when the Elders were being sent out to sell tracts none wanted to go with "the boy," but the results of the day's labor proved that the child had been most successful. The Lord blessed him abundantly in his labors. I spoke about 20 min. and told the brethren I felt unworthy of my high calling, but hoped the Lord would assist me to magnify it. I hoped to overcome my disposition to speculate, and place myself in a free position as far as finances are concerned. I envied the patience of Pres. Snow; the ability to say only good things of every person as Bro. Richards; the financial talents of Moses Thatcher and H. J. Grant; the winning manners of F. M. Lyman and J. H. Smith; the inspiration of John W. Taylor; the humbleness of M. W. Merrill and A. H. Lund; the suavity of John W. Young and the goodness of
all. I asked for the patience of the brethren in my behalf. Bro. John W. Young spoke of his family affairs which had not been and were not now agreeable. In fact, his family troubles (doubtless the suing for a divorce of his favorite wife Luella) during the last three months had done more to humble him than anything else in his whole life. He believed that good would come of his seeming misfortunes. We adjourned at 11:30 till May 29th to convene in this same room. After tying up my horse's bridle which she had broken while standing by the office, I drove to the farm and got to bed about 1 a.m. very tired but pleased with the labors of the day. (2)

[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] [After telegraphing again on the 7th using ZCMI and other men's names] Clark and I were notified by Bancroft that he had received word from Dodge to give us all the information we wished. We took the book containing the names of those in the Second Precinct and checked those that we understood had registered along the line of their road and Bancroft promised to have them compared. I learned this from Clark I did not go to the depot myself . . . The book of registered names was handed to Bancroft yesterday. Today Clark and I called and learned that all the checking which had been done was on the construction pay rolls and that there had been no checking done on the regular pay rolls of the company. We were told that it would take days to do anything of that kind. The permission to examine the rolls reminds me of a death be repentance. I hope that our merchants will teach the Rio Grande a lesson by having nothing to do with them in the future . .
. I called at the Herald office and the question was being considered as to whether we should publish the names of Hymes and Mcallum or not as being the two person who had gone down the Rio Grande road and registered the men on the line. I did not favor the publication as to my mind there was not sufficient evidence to sustain us in so doing. (1)

The history of Z.C.M.I, Jan 18, 1890

-- Jan 18, 1890
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] I met Capt[ain] Bonfield of Chicago at the Herald building today. I met with the City Central Committee. At 2 PM met at the Gardo with a number of the brethren and it was agreed that free schools be provided for during the present legislature. At five PM attended a meeting in the ZCMI office at which the subject discussed was as to what would be the best course to prevent the frauds being successful that had been perpetrated by illegal registering on the line of the Denver and Rio Grande Western RR Co. Webber, Rowe, Dinwooday, Young, Clark, Romney, Thatcher and myself were present and the feeling was that in case there was no action taken by the Denver and Rio Grande to prevent the voting of their men who had no right to vote that we should get the merchants to withdraw their freight from that company. (1)

-- Jan 20, 1890
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] At ten AM attended a meeting at the Gardo. After a long and a full talk it was decided by those who were present that under the circumstances that the best thing that could be done in case it were possible to effect it would be to have a fusion ticket for the coming City election . . . At 4:30 attended a meeting at the ZCMI office of the same parties who met there Saturday to discuss the D&RG freight question and the best plans to prevent the voting of men on that road who had been illegally registered. We hoped to meet Mr. Dennett of that Road at the meeting but he is out of the city. (1)

-- Jan 21, 1890
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] At ten attended a meeting at the Gardo. There were present the members of the City Central Committee and they desired to learn the wishes of the brethren as to the proper persons to be chosen to run on the ticket of the Peoples Party. There was a long chat but it was voted as the sense of the meeting that the matter be left entirely in the hands of the Delegates to the Convention. It was considered best not to give any instructions. At Two PM our Rd committee met at the ZCMI office with Mr. JH Bennett of the Denver Railroad. We explained to him that there had been a car run down on his road as far as Pleasant Valley Junction and that there had been men on the different sections of his road registered who had never so much as seen Salt Lake. He said that he had no knowledge of the matter and that he would do all he could to prevent fraud on the line of his road. Said any of the men on the road who came in to vote who were not entitled to do so wo
uld be discharged. . . . This evening attended the 10th Ward Political Club. Cha[rle]s W. P. Penrose and Myself were the speakers. (1)

-- Feb 3, 1890
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] I called at the Gardo and told the brethren there as to the success of the trip to Denver. Clark and I called this afternoon on Mr. Bancroft. After reading the letter from Mr. Dodge he said that he did not feel that he was authorized to allow us to examine the company's pay rolls. We telegraphed to Mr. Dodge that Bancroft construed his letter to allow us to examine the pay roll only for the list of names shown to him in Denver and asking him to instruct him to allow us to examine the November and December rolls. This evening attended a meeting of the members of the Legislature in the ZCMI Shoe Factory. A school Bill providing for free schools was read and talked about to some length. I confess that I regret our inability to have Church schools in our territory. (1)

I Called upon Brother Teasdale who was sick at Br Turners. I then Met in Council upon the Dedication of the Temple. After Dinner I met again in Council at 3 oclok. J F Smith returned from Bear Lake Conference. I received a letter from Charles A Munch. I wrote him a letter in return. The temple was in Debt to the ZCMI some $20,000. (Karl G. Maeser) August 27: Sixty-seven students attended the opening of the Brigham Young Academy on Center Street in Provo, Utah. The school house was "a grim non-descript structure without beauty or grace or any other aesthetic feature calculated to invite a second look. The lower floor was made up of two large rooms at the front, and two small ones at the back. The upper floor had been designed for use as a theater. It consisted of one large room and a stageâ€"both so utterly bare and gloomy as to make inappropriate any form of entertainment except tragedy."

1884. Tragedy struck when the school burned to the ground. Classes reconvened in the ZCMI warehouse, which was used until 1892, when Education Hall was dedicated on University Avenue. (3)

-- Tues., June 30th, 1885
[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] Attended court part of the day where Bro. F. A. Brown's case was called. The forenoon was occupied in getting a jury, and in the afternoon at his own request he was sworn as a witness. He was then permitted to read a paper in which he gave a short review of his past life, admitting his marriage with two women and saying that he would rather have his head severed from his body than to deny his religion and his God. After his testimony the case went to the Jury who brought in a verdict of guilty with a recommendation for mercy. . . . As I was returning home I went to the Co op store where a large crowd had gathered. By suggestion of some of our leaders the flags over which the "Mormons" had control were mostly placed at half mast in mourning for the sad persecution now going on in our midst. The flags at the city hall and court house had already been raised to the masthead at the command of a few anti Mormons, and now, at 5 p.m. they had asse
mbled at ZCMI with threats of using force in hoisting the flag. The police were there in numbers, however, and no attempt at violence was made. Finally Wm. Jennings and Thos. G. Webber came and had the stars and stripes raised, to the utter disgust of the many staunch Saints. Threats were then made to raise the flags on the Gardo House, Presidents Office, Tithing and Es. News offices, the Temple and Tabernacle, but a number of friends assembled at my home and we had an exhibition of fireworks until quite a late hour. At the celebration in Ogden today Apostle Moses Thatcher threw a bombshell into the camp of the Liberals by reciting some of Utah's sufferings because of religious bigotry. His statements were too true to rest easy on the minds of the anti Mormons and he was reprimanded by Judge Powers, the orator of the day. Gentiles are really beginning to think that the Saints are in rebellion. (4)

[Francis M. Lyman] Before entering into our meeting I took bro[ther] Moses to one side and labored to get him to see that he was in error in striking out in politics on his own hook. He would not see with me on that matter. ... Pat Lanan's request to see the Presidency, to get assurances from them as to whether gentiles and particularly our enemies would receive fair treatment if Utah is admitted as a state in the union. It was decided on motion of Pres[ident] Cannon as follows: "I move that these brethren, F. M. Lyman and John Henrey Smith be authorized to say to Mr. Lannan for the Presidency and Apostles that we are willing to make and pledge which honorable men could be asked to give, or honorable men be willing to receive that whatever influence we may have will always be exerted in favor of the equal rights of all classes of citizens before the law. and that we feel fully warranted in giving the strongest pledge that no non Mormon whatever his past attitude towards the M
ormon people may have been shall ever be disturbed in his person of business in any way whatever in the event of our territory being admitted into the Union." Armed with a copy of the above with Bro[ther] Smith and B[isho]p Clawson met Mr. Lannan in ZCMI office and deliberately talked the situation over. Lannon was not satisfied with the above so concluded to formulate a list of questions to be answered concerning the "Kingdom of God," which he will let us have later on. He says statehood is coming and no mistake and he and his friends are very much frightened. He says they will pack up their means and get out of the country. We reported to Pres[iden]ts Cannon & Smith the result of the interview. They were pleased. (4)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 17 We arose in the morning from our Bed on the ground and Cooked our Breakfast from a fire made of Dead Joshua's a species of Cacktus 12 feet high, 12 to 16 inches through which when dead makes a good fire. This desert abounds with the greatest variety of Cacktuses I ever saw. The Joshuas here are ownly 12 feet high. In Calafornia they grow 50 feet. We also have the Common Cacktus 6 feet high, the Devils pin quishim 3 feet, the snake Cacktus 6 feet, The yankee pin Cacktus that is Covered with Regular pins with heads on that answer for use as well as sale pins. Then we have the Common Leaf prickly pear.

We drove to day through the Canyon and on to Santa Clara Settlement. I stoped with a good kind friend who gave me a room by my self with a good fire, Bed, furniture, and a Plenty to Eat. I took a good supper then a Bath and Change of Clothing which I much needed after wandering in a dusty desert for a week. Brother David left for home. I went to bed and had a good nights rest. 25 M.

A Synopsis of Wilford Woodruffs Travels and labors taken from his Journals by Himself from 1834 to 1878 inclusive Making (44) Forty Four years of Labor in the Ministry as a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. This does not include any of the year 1879. Neither does it report the dedications recorded in the Begining of this Journal. If any Historian wishes to Record or publish this synopsis of my Labor, He will have to Blend the two accounts Together the forepart of this Journal as well as this Account and add the labor of 1879. It may be thought Strange why a man of as busy a life as I have lead, Should spend as much time as I have in Journalizing. I have been inspired and required of the Lord to do it. There is no portion of my time do I Consider any better spent time than in Journalizing, and writing History and keeping an Account of the dealings of God with the Latter Day Saints.

The history of Z.C.M.I, 1846-47

LDS History Chronology: Z.C.M.I

-- During 1846-47
[William Clayton] In March, while camped on the plains of Iowa, he wrote the words to "Come, Come, Ye Saints." He spent the winter of 1846-47 at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and was with the vanguard pioneer company that crossed the plains to Utah in 1847 and selected the site for the new Mormon gathering place in Salt Lake Valley. His published pioneer journal is the most well-known account of that expedition. He also prepared and published The Latter-day Saints' Emigrants' Guide, a meticulous description of the entire route from Winter Quarters to Salt Lake City, with suggestions for camping places. It became an invaluable guide not only for Mormon migrants, but also for thousands of pioneers bound for Oregon and California. In Utah, Clayton became a prominent and well respected citizen. He continued for a time to help keep the records of the church, and he also engaged in various public and private business activities. He became auditor for the Territory of Utah as well as r
ecorder of marks and brands, holding both positions until his death. He also worked for a time as treasurer of the Deseret Telegraph Company and secretary of ZCMI. His private ventures included collecting debts, filing land claims, acting as an attorney, lending money, merchandising, farming, and mining speculation. He also continued to participate in cultural activities, particularly those associated with music. (1)

-- During July 1847
[Wilford Woodruff] Woodruff was a member of the Mormon pioneer company that arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. In addition to his ecclesiastical responsibilities, he worked hard to support his family on his farm in Salt Lake City which consisted of a garden, orchard, and herds of cattle and sheep. Products from his soil repeatedly won awards at the territorial fair. Besides farming, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and helped popularize fly-fishing in Utah. He served in a variety of community capacities including the Utah Territorial Legislature, the board of directors of Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI), and president of the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing Society of Utah, the Utah Territorial Horticultural Society, and the Universal Scientific Society. (2)

-- During January 1868
The Utah Magazine begins. Founders are Church members who are disaffected with Brigham Young‘s economic policies (especially the Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution). Abandoned in 1870, with launch of Mormon Tribune by same founders. (3)

-- During March 1868
Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution, known as ZCMI, the "People's Store," is what one historian called America's First Department Store, and was founded in March 1868. By that date the Latter-day Saints had lived in the Great Basin for little more than two decades but had already foreseen a new threat to their peace and prosperity with the coming of the railroad. To combat the inevitable change that territorial growth would bring Brigham Young gathered a group of community and business leaders to form an organization of community-owned merchandising dedicated to the support of home manufacturing and to sell goods "as low as they can possibly be sold, and let the profits be divided among the people at large." Z.C.M.I

The new topic at LDS-Church-History is Z.C.M.I.

Now a retired department store, the history of Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution is surprisingly interesting.

Setup up by the political organization - The Council of the Fifty in March, 1868 as a "co-operative covenant" its purpose was to sell goods "as low as they can possibly be sold" with "the profits be[ing] divided among the people [Mormons] at large."  Concerns over the economic impact of the transcontinental railroad and economic tensions with non-Mormons prompted its creation.

Brigham proposed a boycott of all "Gentile" (non-Mormon) merchants, which was sustained by the Salt Lake City School of Prophets, and later sustained in General Conference.  The church opened the first store in 1869 and the next year began a manufacturing enterprise which became known particularly for their boots, shoes and "mountaineer" overalls.

Prices were fixed, and remained constant even when goods were scarce.  Church leaders told members it was their duty "to sustain" the institution with the hope that profits would be widely distributed to church members through stock ownership, as opposed to the more typical approach of just the wealthy owning stock and further increasing their wealth.  About 150 retail branches eventually expanded throughout the territory in most Mormon towns.

Eventually Z.C.M.I. became known as America's first Department store.  The facade of the old downtown department store is set to return in the downtown Salt Lake reconstruction project.

Over the next couple of months, the history of Z.C.M.I will be traced through, covering the period from its creation to its recent demise.

In Monterrey, Mexico President Spencer W. Kimball preaches: "I mentioned to your brothers and sisters in Mexico City last week that in 1947 I was in Arizona at the temple. As thought and prayed and studied, I had what I thought was a dream, maybe a vision. There were many Mexican people in the temple on that same day. As I looked into the future, I saw that the Lamanites were going to grow and develop. As my vision continued, I saw great numbers of Lamanites and Nephites now in beautiful homes with all the comforts that science can give. I see you Lamanite people grown to cover a thousand hills with your flocks and herds." (2)

[U.S. Religious History] On this night, William Murray (son of American atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair) had a dream which he interpreted as a religious vision from God, leading to his conversion to a fundamentalist brand of Christianity. He gave up drinking and smoking and engaged in efforts to undue the separation of church and state which his mother had long struggled for. (3)

BYU campus newspaper reports that professor of religion Richard Thomson, announced in a class that "during a vision last night, it was made known to me that 'you bet' is the anglicization of "hubet," the pure Adamic word for "you're welcome." Either the word has survived relatively intact for many millennia, or else it was revealed to the true Saints in the nineteenth century as part of the restoration of all things. Personally, I support the latter view." This announcement leads to the creation of the "Hubet Society of BYU" (HSBYU), which in turn leads to an attempt to create an Adamic 101 course. The entire movement is crushed when Jesse Wright, Provo Central Stake president, speaks at a BYU fireside and calls Professor Thomson, who lived in the stake, "insane," "an apostate and a heretic." Professor Thomson soon disappears from BYU. (2)

DESERET NEWS publishes John H. Despite this statement, Koyle is soon excommunicated, due to pressure from Apostle Mark E. Petersen. (3)
