[U.S. Religious History] In the encyclical Evangelium Vitae, Pope John Paul II ordered all Catholic voters, judges, and legislators to obey Vatican teaching in their decisions and votes: "In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or to vote for it." [U.S. Religious History] The ACLU filed a complaint against Judge Moore, charging that his display of Ten Commandments and his practice of initiating courtroom proceedings with a prayer, violate the First Amendment. (1)

A new administrative position, Area Authority, was announced by President Hinckley during the priesthood session of general conference. The position of regional representative was discontinued after 28 years. (2)
