Lorenzo Snow, Feb 13, 1896; Thursday

-- Feb 13, 1896; Thursday
The First Presidency met with the Twelve at the Temple: Present: Presidents [Wilford] Woodruff, [George Q.] Cannon, [Joseph F.] Smith and L[orenzo]. Snow, and Elders F[ranklin]. D. Richards, B[righam]. Young [Jr.], H[eber]. J. Grant, M[arriner]. W[ood]. Merrill, F[rancis]. M. Lyman and A[braham]. H. Cannon. ... The Presidency then withdrew, and the following brethren met to consider the case of Elder B. H. Roberts, viz, President Lorenzo Snow, F[ranklin]. D. Richards, B[righam]. Young, F[rancis]. M. Lyman, Heber J. Grant, John W. Taylor, M[arriner]. W[ood]. Merrill, and A[braham]. H. Cannon of the Twelve; of the First Council of Seventies S[eymour]. B. Young, (President) B. H. Roberts, George Reynolds, J. G[olden]. Kimball, R[ulon]. S. Wells and Edward Stevenson. The position taken by Elder Roberts during the late political campaign in reference to the authority of the Presiding Priesthood, was considered for several hours, Elder Roberts maintaining that he had done nothing but what he considered his right, and the other brethren holding that he had acted without the advice and counsel of the Presiding Authorities, and had taken a course to belittle their authority and weaken it in the minds of a great many people. When the meeting adjourned in the evening, after all had spoken, no conclusion had been arrived at, but further consideration was deferred to give Brother Roberts time to consider the matter in all its bearings. (1)

Sawed wood and worked around home until 12 Noon, when I went to Temple as per appointment. There were present of the Twelve Apostles Lorenzo Snow, Brigham Young [Jr.], Franklin D. Richards, F[rancis]. M. Lyman, Heber J. Grant, M[arriner]. W[ood]. Merill, John W. Taylor, and Abra[ha]m Cannon. Also of the 1st Council of Seventies Seymour B. Young, B. H. Roberts, George Reynolds, J. G[olden]. Kimball, Rulon S. Wells and Edward Stevenson.

Apostle Snow presided. A hymn was sung. Prayer offered by Apostle Lyman. Bro[ther] Snow in a very kind manner explained the object of above meeting. said that Elder Roberts had made statements in public gatherings and had taken positions in political matters that the Apostles felt it their duty to investigate, that this was not to be considered a trial but a [illegible] of investigation. He said considerable in way of explanation, but manifested a very kind spirit.....

Apostle Lyman, Grant, Seymour B. Young and others wept and cried like children, and begged and pled, but of no avail. Apostle Snow again spoke as I never heard him speak before. ... (2)

-- Feb 13, 1896; Thursday
Presidency and Twelve met in Temple at 11 a.m. Quite a busy session which lasted until 1 p.m. Presidency went away and Seventies came[;] only 6 of the [Twelve] present. I was appointed to open the case which I did reading many extracts from an interview Bro[ther]. R[oberts]. had with Herald reporter. He denied nothing & took back nothing. Made some explanations on some unimportant points, but repeated his obnoxious expressions as the sentiments of his heart now. Every man viz. Lorenzo Snow, F[ranklin]. D. Richards B[righam]. Young, [Francis] M. Lyman H[eber]. J. Grant Jno. [John] W. T[aylor]. & M[arriner]. W[ood]. Merrill, all condemned the course Bro[ther]. R[oberts]. had taken. S[eymour]. B. Young, Geo[rge] Reynolds Rulon Wells, [J.] Golden Kimball & Bro[ther]. [Edward] Stevenson were perfectly agreed with the Twelve, some strong appeals were made to Bro[ther] R[oberts]. but it had not [sic] effect uppon [sic] him whatever. Motion adjourn it was put after Pres[iden]t [Lorenzo] Snow said I shall pray for you Bro[ther]. R[oberts]. I said "wait a moment, Bro[ther] R[oberts]. will you pray for yourself[."] He answered to tell the truth I do not feel much like it now. I said then Bro[ther] R[oberts]. I do not accept your decision for it is the one from beneath that influences you and I shall wait until that sweet Godlike feeling that I have seen in you in the past has possession of you before I give you up. Bro[ther] Lyman then approached Bro[ther]. R[oberts]. and weeping aloud implored him to yield to the unanimity of feeling manifested by his brethren. Bro[ther] R[oberts]. looked on Bro[ther]. L[yman's]. tears and upon all of us as if we who were sobbing aloud as tho[ugh]' we were acting apart. He never showed the least signs of relenting. Then we dismissed and Bro[ther]. R[oberts]. stalked out of the room with a hard expression upon his face not noticing myself & others, others he did notice. When I left the Temple going around the south side I sobbed aloud for in this investigation I feard that even one or perhaps more of the Twelve may be implicated. My nephew R[ichard]. W. Young is not friendly to the First Presidency and it will end [in] disaster should he persist in his present course. I can see one course only for the Presidency to pursue as also the Twelve Brethren, who in Cooler moments still adhear [sic] to statements made in heat of political argument must retract or be disfellowshipped. Lorenzo Snow, Thursday, Nov 14, 1895

-- Thursday, Nov 14, 1895
[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

Prest. W. Woodruff, Geo. Q. Cannon, Joseph F. Smith, Lorenzo Snow, B. Young, F. M. Lyman, J. W. Taylor, A. H. Cannon and myself met in Council at the Temple and talked over some matters concerning sealing and adoptions.

[Went to Afton, Wyoming, for stake conference and meetings, November 15-21.] (1)

-- Monday, Dec 2, 1895
[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

Presidents W. Woodruff, Geo. Q. Cannon, Jos. F. Smith, Lorenzo Snow, Franklin D. Richards, Heber J. Grant, Abraham H. Cannon and myself met in Council.

We were informed by Prest. W. Woodruff that the Presidency of the Church had invested in the Ogden Power and Light Co. and that some twelve hundred dollars was necessary to put through the job. That the money could be borrowed if the Church would endorse the paper. We all voted to do this ... (1)

-- 1896, January 4
Utah became U.S. 45th state, proclamation signed by President Grover Cleveland. (2)

-- Jan 9, 1896; Thursday
... Pres[iden]t Lorenzo Snow said that his feelings with reference to Bro[ther] Thatcher were that we should ask him to go to the First Presidency of the Church and make things right with them. Referred to the time just before the dedication of the [Salt Lake] Temple, when the brethren had labored until nearly midnight with Bro[ther] Moses Thatcher to endeavor to get him to harmonize with his brethren, and at this time he was warned that unless he made reconciliation with the Presidency, we would announce at the dedication that the hearts of all the brethren were united as the hearts of one man with the exception of Bro[ther] Moses Thatcher. Prior to this meeting Bro[ther] Snow sent Bro[ther] Brigham Young [Jr.] to labor with Bro[ther] Moses Thatcher, and although he had worked with him for hours he was unable to make any impression of his mind. Referred to the fact that after the priesthood meeting held in the assembly Hall at the close of the October conference, wherein Bro[ther] Joseph F. [Smith] referred to Bro[ther] Moses Thatcher as not being in harmony with his brethren, that Bro[ther] Thatcher had called upon him and that they had talked together for about three quarters of an hour, and he had pleaded with Bro[ther] Moses to go to the First Presidency and place himself in their hands, and account of the spirit manifested by Brother Thatcher he had hoped that he would follow his advice, and he was disappointed when he learned that he had not done so. He would like another effort made with Bro[ther] Moses, but felt that nothing could be effected with him unless it was done by the Lord. The spark which would reach the heart of Bro[ther] Moses must come from the Lord.

No wisdom which we possess can do it. ... (3)

[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

Lorenzo Snow, Franklin D. Richards, Brigham Young, Moses Thatcher, Francis M. Lyman, John Henry Smith, George Teasdale, Heber J. Grant, Martinet W. Merrill, and Abraham H. Cannon of the Council of the Apostles met in their room in the Temple at 10 a.m. Prayer by Geo. Teasdale. Prest. Lorenzo Snow spoke against the taking of animal life and the eating of meats. F. D. Richards endorsed Bro. L. Snow's views, as did B. Young, M. Thatcher, F. M. Lyman and Myself, we being all that spoke today. Bro. M. Thatcher explained his condition. Our meeting was a most interesting one. (1)

-- Oct 2, 1895
[Apostle Marriner W. Merrill Diary] Wednesday. In Salt Lake. Had our Quorum meeting at 2 p. m. I occupied 1 hour at President Snow's request relating my experiences and dreams, etc. (2)

-- Oct 7, 1895
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] At ten attended a Priesthood meeting in the Assembly Hall Brief remarks were made by Pres[iden]ts Lorenzo Snow, Marriner W. Merrill and David H. Cannon regarding Temple Work and the necessity of making correct records. The brethren felt that many were very neglectful with reference to their temple work and testified that it was as much a duty to do our work in the temples for the dead as it was to go and preach the gospel. Pres[iden]t Franklin D. Richards spoke on the necessity of getting up a good library to assist in getting the proper information for those wishing genealogical knowledge. Pres[iden]t Joseph F. Smith spoke 35 minutes mainly on Home Manufacturing and Priesthood. He referred to an apostle and one of the seven presidents of seventies having accepted nominations for political offices without consulting with the members of the their quorums and he felt this action was all wrong, I spoke for fifteen minutes after brother Joseph F. and endorsed all that he had said. ... [Cannon continued] Referred to the great necessity of all our the men at the meeting doing all in their power to have a full vote cast in favor of Statehood. Endorsed what Pres[iden]t Joseph F. Smith had said about men not going in for political offices without first getting the consent of those who presided over them. Said he was glad brother Smith had said what he had, but said he would not have said it ... Have met a lot of people this afternoon who are very much worked up over the remarks of Pres[iden]t Smith at the Priesthood meeting this morning. I am sure I endorse with all my heart ever word that he said and feel that there was no just reason to complain at his remarks. (3)

Lorenzo Snow, Aug 7, 1895

-- Aug 7, 1895
[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] [Meeting of Apostles, remarks of Lorenzo Snow] He felt with all his heart that Bro. Geo. Teasdale should be released as the President of the Mexican Mission and come home and labor with us among the different stakes. He respeted brother Teasdale but flet that he was not the proper man to preside in Mexico, and that his labors were needed in the different stakes. He related a dream which he had about Teasdale, Macdonald, and Eyring and from what he saw he feared trouble of a serious nature. He felt that hte affairs of the Mexican mission were in a very precarious condition, and it was his feeling that Anthony W. Ivins of Saint George should be called to preside there. ...

[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] At ten attended a meeting of the Apostles in the Temple. Pres[iden]t Lorenzo Snow, and apostles Richards, Young, Thatcher, Lyman, Smith, Teasdale, Grant, Merrill and Cannon were present. [Much on meat in Word of Wisdom.] After the remarks of Bro[ther] Brigham (Richards and Snow and been lengthy too) we adjourned for a couple of hours as it was suggested that too long meetings might wear brother Moses out. ... At the afternoon meeting Brother Moses was the first speaker. He said that these meetings of the twelve had always been a source of pleasure to him ... He believed that with Statehood financial prosperity would come to us, and that the heavy load that the First Presidency were now carrying would be lifted from their shoulders, and that we would soon have the church in a strong position financially. He desired sincerely that Pres[iden]t Snow and his brethren should forgive him for any neglect of his in the past, to have attended his quorum meetings. He might have felt that his poor health was more of an excuse in failing to be with us than he should. He felt that eventually his health would be restored to him. Closed his remarks by praying sincerely that we might all be kept in the straight and narrow path that leads to life eternal. (1)

Prayed the Lord to sustain us and give us strength to stand when prosperity came, as it was bound to do. (I feel very thankful to have Prest. [Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

My case in court was adjourned until tomorrow morning. Presidents L. Snow, F. D. Richards, Brigham Young, Moses Thatcher, F. M. Lyman, H. J. Grant, John W. Taylor, M. W. Merrill, Abraham H. Cannon and I met in Council.

M. W. Merrill had a discourse read that purported to be one delivered by Bro. Moses in Bear Lake Co. Idaho where Bro. Moses was said to have cast reflections upon the Presidency of the whole church and Bro. Merrill. Some letters that he passed between Bros. Thatcher and Merrill were read. Bro. Moses said he did not make the statement in the form in which it was. Bros. Lorenzo Snow, F. D. Richards, F. M. Lyman, H. J. Grant and I thought Bro. Moses ought to write and correct this matter as also Bro. Merrill.

Bros. Moses Thatcher, John W. Taylor and Abraham H. Cannon thought he ought not. Bro. Abraham H. Cannon said the Presidency of the Church were predjuced against Bro. M. Thatcher. Bro. Moses being in such poor health he was given one week to write out his denial of the statement. We adjourned for one week. (3)

Lorenzo Snow, 1894, November 13

-- 1894, November 13
Genealogical Society of Utah organized. (1)

-- During 1894
(John W. Taylor) After "laboring for nearly six months almost entirely in his own interests," Taylor was charged by President Lorenzo Snow to attend "more faithfully to his ecclesiastical duties, and less to his personal affairs." John W.'s business speculations brought financial ruin to several friends, including J. Golden Kimball. By 1902 Taylor's business prospects were so abysmal that the Twelve appointed Reed Smoot to persuade creditors to settle $140,000 of Taylor's debts at ten cents on the dollar. A decade later, Taylor's Mormon friends in Canada endured similar losses as his speculative schemes again collapsed. (2)

-- During circa 1894
"[T]his doctrine [As God is...] had been taught to the apostles by the Prophet Joseph Smith, although it had not been not made public until some time later." - Lorenzo Snow (3)

-- During ca. 1894
[Book of Temple Ordinances, ca. 1894; p. 18] John Willoughby and Eliza Fox, both of them members of the Church, were married in England, and had three children, he died there, and she came to Utah with her children, where she married a member of the Church, named David Moore. She was afterwards sealed to her dead husband (Willoughby,) Moore acting as Proxey and the three children were sealed to her and Willoughby. She had five children by Moore, two of them are now living and they expressed a desire to be sealed with the three dead ones, to their father (Moore) and to their mother. What should be done about this? This question was answered, as follows, by the First Presidency, to whom it was referred by President Lorenzo Snow: Taking the old Israelitish law as a basis, the children ought to be sealed to the first husband and the mother. Although the woman was not sealed to John Willoughby while he was in life, that was no fault of his as he was not within reach of facilities for the performance of that ceremony, and he did the best he could under the circumstances. When David Moore married Eliza Fox he did so with an understanding of the prior claim of the first husband, which he appears to have recognized. The sealing to the first husband was also evidently according to the desire of the woman. (4)

[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] When I was in the Temple Wednesday I explained to President Lorenzo Snow how I came to make a speech in the Theatre and he said that he felt that I did just the right thing under the circumstances in responding to the call that was made for me to say something, and felt that there would not be any fault found by the First Presidency on account of what I had done. I have called in the office of the Presidency a number of times since Saturday and have thought if they did not like what I had done in talking at the Theatre that they would say something about it but they have not mentioned the matter and I have not said anything about it. Special Training courses for Priesthood officers and teachers and missionaries-- Salt Lake City, Utah.

This letter, directed to President Lorenzo Snow and the Council of Apostles discusses two suggestions for upgrading the educational level of two groups of voluntary workers within the L.D.S. Church (1) Priesthood officers and teachers and (2) the proselyting missionary group. The First Presidency, while recognizing the need for this upgrading of the educational level of the Saints owing to the rise in the general educational level in America as well as Europe, warn against the adoption of a program which will result in a "trained ministry." The Council of the Twelve Apostles are responsible for both priesthood and missionary groups.

Office of The First Presidency, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 20, 1894.

President Lorenzo Snow and Council of Apostles.

DEAR BRETHREN:

We have received a letter from B. Cluff, Jr., principal of the Brigham Young Academy at Provo making some suggestions in regard to increasing the efficiency of members of the different quorums of Priesthood, so that they might conduct meetings and be made more familiar with their duties, powers and responsibilities of their various offices.

A letter has also been received from Bro. John W. Young upon the same subject although written from a different standpoint in which he makes some analogous suggestions concerning increasing the efficiency and capabilities of the missionaries who go abroad to preach the Gospel.

These letters have received our careful consideration; and they have also been submitted to the general board of education. There are many features in both letters that impress us favorably. You will no doubt agree with us in saying, that any plan that can be adopted that will make our elders more capable and efficient as preachers of the Gospel at home and abroad, that will increase their usefulness and make them more enlightened in setting forth the truth, ought to be adopted by us. It is known to all of us who have had experience in the missionary field that there are very many, in fact a great proportion of those who go out, who do not do justice to the message of which they are the bearers, and do not display that knowledge of the truth and of the character of the great work of the last days that one would naturally expect them to possess in view of their high calling and of the exalted origin of the Priesthood which they bear.

It is very desirable that something be done, if possible, to make a better impression upon the world through the medium of our elders. The work of God is attracting wide-spread attention, and a different class of people manifest an interest in our doctrines than formerly. The world is also progressing in matters of education. There was a time when elders were taken from the plow, the anvil, the shoemaker's shop and carpenter's bench, or any other pursuit, and sent out as missionaries, and were very successful in reaching the people; in fact, some of the most successful of our missionaries have been men who could scarcely read or write. But since those days a great change has taken place in America as well as in European lands. Education has become very general, and in many countries compulsory. There is no reason now why any one should be ignorant of book learning, and it seems necessary that our elders should keep pace in this respect with the rest of the world. But you will perceive the danger there is of our people falling into the old ruts in which sectarians have been running for a long period of time, and adopting those spirit-killing systems which have prevailed in theological seminaries and other places where men in the sectarian world have been qualified for what they are pleased to call the ministry.

In considering these two letters which we herewith enclose, it will be necessary to guard against this evil in any plan which may be decided upon: so that in adopting a system that will afford our elders such a training as is herein indicated, it should be entirely free from any tendency likely to check the Spirit of the Lord or cause men to depend upon their own learning instead of the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

Trusting you will find time to give the enclosed communications your attention and to reach conclusions concerning the subject of which they treat, we remain with sentiments of esteem.

Your Brethren, WILFORD WOODRUFF, GEORGE Q. CANNON. JOSEPH F. SMITH. {1894-October 20-Letter on file, Church Historian's Library,} (3)

Revelation to Wilford Woodruff-the Law of Adoption-- Historical Magazine 13:145-152 (October, 1922).

Wilford Woodruff announced that he was making the statement reproduced below as President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He states that although the fundamental principles for the sealing ordinances in the temples were revealed to Joseph Smith (he had President George Q. Cannon read from Section 128 of the Doctrine and Covenants), that Joseph Smith nor Brigham Young nor John Taylor who preceded him as President of the Church had received all the revelation that was necessary to completely carry out the sealing ordinances properly:

He said in this regard:

"I have not felt satisfied, neither did President Taylor, neither has any man since the Prophet Joseph who has attended to the ordinance of adoption in the temples of our God. We have felt that there was more to be revealed upon the subject than we had received. Revelations were given to us in the St. George Temple, which President Young presented to the Church of God. Changes were made there, and we still have more changes to make, in order to satisfy our Heavenly Father, satisfy our dead and ourselves. I will tell you what some of them are. I have prayed over this matter, and my brethren have. We have felt as President Taylor said, that we have got to have more revelation concerning sealing under the law of adoption."

President Woodruff then announced to the General Conference and particularly to the presidents of the four temples in Utah that he had gone "before the Lord" to know who he should be adopted to and that the "Spirit of God" instructed him that he should be sealed to his natural father. Prior to this time it had been the practice to be sealed to the "prophets and apostles" in the Church. President Woodruff now pronounced the prior practice an incorrect procedure and called upon the membership of the church to accept as a revelation this announcement, which incidentally he had previously presented to his counselors and to the Quorum of Twelve Apostles.

This revelation on the Law of Adoption, with its accompanying explanation by President Woodruff, sets forth quite clearly a philosophy of a developmental process in the establishment of L.D.S. Church doctrine and procedure over an historical or chronological continuum-or to put it in scriptural terminology-"We believe all that God has revealed, all that he does now reveal, and we believe that he will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God." (L.D.S. Ninth Article of Faith)

Perhaps the best commentary on this new revelation on temple work given in 1894 remains in the Conference Report for April, 1894 and the reference given in the heading above this note.

In these two sources both the discourse and announcement of the will of the Lord by President Wilford Woodruff and a commentary by President George Q. Cannon, one of his counselors are given in full. The reader might well study carefully both statements of Presidents Woodruff and Cannon.

There are several other very interesting points brought out by President Woodruff in this discourse that are worthy of particular notice.

President Woodruff states rather categorically that the chronological age of a person or prophet is not a determining factor in his ability to receive revelation, citing as his two extremes the revelations to Adam at the age of 927 years and the revelations to Joseph Smith at this age of 14 years.

He also accepts as authentic and literal the advanced ages of the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets, stating that when they were "four or five hundred years old they took wives, begat children, and raised up posterity."

THE LAW OF ADOPTION

Discourses Delivered at the General Conference of the Church, the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday, April 18, 1894.

PRESIDENT WILFORD WOODRUFF

I feel thankful for the privilege of meeting with so many of the Latter-day Saints this morning. In order to present my position before the Saints I wish to say that I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over sixty years, a member of the quorum of the Apostles fifty-five years, and the President of the Church for a short time. During all these years, and in all my travels, I have never seen a moment when I have had the power to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ or to administer in any of the ordinances of the House of the Lord, acceptable to God or to myself, only by the assistance of the Holy Ghost; and I do not know of any other man that could ever do this. Even the Son of God, in referring to His work, said: "I do nothing of myself, but as my Father has taught me, I speak these things." So it has been with all the prophets and patriarchs in every age of the world; they have had to be assisted by the power of God. I occupy that position today before this assembly. Therefore, as the Lord commanded us not to speak only as we are moved upon by the Holy Ghost, I desire that, and in order to obtain it I want the prayers and faith of the Latter-day Saints.

I have some things resting upon me that I wish to present before the Latter-day Saints, and in order to do this I will call upon President George Q. Cannon to read from the Book of Doctrine and Covenants concerning the subject which I wish to speak upon. (President Cannon read from Sec. 128, of Doc. and Cov. Resuming, President Woodruff said:)

Thus you have before you the subject which is resting upon us, and which we wish to present to the Latter-day Saints. Let me say that age has very little to do with revelation. In an early age of the world, old Father Adam, three years previous to his death-he being nearly one thousand years of age-called together his posterity in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and he stood upon his feet for hours, clothed with the power of God and the revelations of heaven, and blessed his posterity, some seven of whom, each representing a generation, were High Priests. Among them were Enoch and Methusaleh, both great men of their day and generation. He prophesied upon them what should transpire with their posterity unto the end of time. His old age did not have any effect whatever upon the revelations of God to him. Joseph Smith, when fourteen years of age, while calling upon God in the wilderness, had the heavens opened unto him. Both the Father and Son presented themselves unto him in the clouds of heaven, and the Father said, "This is my beloved Son; hear him." The age of man is very short indeed in this day to what it was in ancient days. Men anciently lived to a very great age. When four or five hundred years old they took wives, begat children, and raised up posterity. Today our age is limited to something like three score years and ten.

I wish to say to the Latter-day Saints that we live in a very important generation. We are blessed with power and authority, holding the Holy Priesthood by the commandment of God, to stand upon the earth and redeem both the living and the dead. If we did not do it, we should be damned and cut off from the earth, and the God of Israel would raise up a people who would do it. The Lord would not permit me to occupy this position one day of my life, unless I was susceptible to the Holy Spirit and to the revelations of God. It is too late in the day for this Church to stand without revelation. Not only the President of the Church should possess this gift and give it unto the people, but his counselors and the Apostles and all men that bear the Holy Priesthood, if they magnify their calling, although they may not be called to give revelations to lead and direct the Church. The spirit of revelation belongs to the Priesthood.

But to come to the subject before us. Perhaps it may be said by the inquiring or the objecting mind, What have you to say about redeeming the dead, or about baptism for the dead, or the work of the Temples of our God, that is not already revealed? I will say this: When the Prophet Joseph had this revelation from heaven, what did he do? There are witnesses here of what he did. He never stopped till he got the fulness of the word of God to him concerning the baptism for the dead. But before doing so he went into the Mississippi river, and so did I, as well as others, and we each baptized a hundred for the dead, without a man to record a single act that we performed. Why did we do it? Because of the feeling of joy we had, to think that we in the flesh could stand and redeem our dead. We did not wait to know what the result of this would be, or what the whole of it should be. Finally the Lord told the Prophet: "When any of you are baptized for your dead, let there be a recorder, and let him be eye witness of your baptisms; let him hear with his ears, that he may testify of a truth, saith the Lord; that in all your recordings it may be recorded in heaven; whatsoever you bind on earth may be bound in heaven; whatsoever you loose on earth, may be loosed in heaven." That was the beginning of this work.

Joseph Smith, instead of living to be nearly a thousand years of age, as Adam did, lived to be about thirty-eight years of age. He brought forth the record of the stick of Joseph in the hands of Ephraim-the history of the ancient inhabitants of this continent. By the power of God he translated that, and it has been published in many languages. Besides this, he organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints upon the foundation of apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus being the chief corner stone. Men were ordained to the Priesthood and sent forth, from the various occupations of life, to carry this gospel to the world. God informed Joseph Smith that he was called to prune the vineyard once more for the last time before the coming of the Son of Man. Since that, thousands of Elders of Israel have been sent into the world to preach the Gospel. Joseph Smith did all this during the fifteen years he held the Priesthood. Let any man read the revelations in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, which were given through him during the little time he spent here in the flesh. It is one of the greatest records that any man ever gave to the human family. Not only this, but he organized the endowments and did a great deal of other work. Who could expect him, during the short time he lived in the flesh, to do more than he did? I received my endowment from under his hands. He brought forth all these ordinances that have been given unto the Latter-day Saints. In fact, it is a marvel and a wonder that he performed as much as he did.

I want to say, as the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that we should now go on and progress. We have not got through revelation. We have not got through the work of God. But at this period we want to go on and fulfillthis commandment of God given through Malachi that the Lord should send Elijah the prophet, "and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Ye sons of men, I say unto you, in the name of Israel's God, those very principles that God has revealed are what have stayed the judgment of the Almighty on the earth. Were it not for these principles, you and I would not be here today. We have had prophets and apostles. President Young who followed President Joseph Smith, led us here. He organized these Temples and carried out the purposes of his calling and office. He laid the foundation of this great Temple on this block, as well as others in the mountains of Israel. What for? That we might carry out these principles of redemption for the dead. He accomplished all that God required at his hands. But he did not receive all the revelations that belong to this work; neither did President Taylor, nor has Wilford Woodruff. There will be no end to this work until it is perfected.

I want to lay before you what there is for us to do at the present time; and in doing this I desire particularly the attention of President Lorenzo Snow, of the Salt Lake Temple; President M. W. Merrill, of the Logan Temple; President J. D. T. McAllister of the Manti Temple, and President D. H. Cannon, of the St. George Temple, and those associated with them. You have acted up to all the light and knowledge that you have had; but you have now something more to do than you have done. We have not fully carried out those principles in fulfillment of the revelations of God to us, in sealing the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers. I have not felt satisfied, neither did President Taylor, neither has any man since the Prophet Joseph who has attended to the ordinance of adoption in the temples of our God. We have felt as President Taylor said, that we have got to have more revelation concerning sealing under the law of adoption. Well, what are these changes? One of them is the principle of adoption.

Now, what are the feelings of Israel? They have felt that they wanted to be adopted to somebody. President Young was not satisfied in his mind with regard to the extent of this matter; President Taylor was not. When I went before the Lord to know who I should be adopted to (we were then being adopted to prophets and apostles), the Spirit of God said to me, "Have you not a father, who begot you?" "Yes, I have." "Then why not honor him? Why not be adopted to him?" "Yes," says I, "that is right." I was adopted to my father, and should have had my father sealed to his father, and so on back; and the duty that I want every man who presides over a Temple to see performed from this day henceforth and forever, unless the Lord Almighty commands otherwise, is, let every man be adopted to his father. When a man receives the endowment, adopt him to his father; not to Wilford Woodruff, nor to any other man outside the lineage of his fathers. That is the will of God to this people. I want all men who preside over these temples in these mountains of Israel to bear this in mind. What business have I to take away the rights of the lineage of any man? What right has any man to do this? No; I say let every man be adopted to his father; and then you will do exactly what God said when he declared He would send Elijah the prophet in the last days. Elijah the prophet appeared unto Joseph Smith and told him the day had come when this principle must be carried out. Joseph Smith did not live long enough to enter any further upon these things. His soul was wound up with this work before he was martyred for the word of God and testimony of Jesus Christ. He told us that there must be a welding link of all dispensations and of the work of God from one generation to another. This was upon his mind more than most any other subject that was given to him. In my prayers the Lord revealed to me, that it was my duty to say to all Israel to carry this principle out, and in fulfillment of that revelation I lay it before this people. I say to all men who are laboring in these temples, carry out this principle, and then we will make one step in advance of what we have had before. Myself and counselors conversed upon this and were agreed upon it, and afterwards we laid it before all the Apostles who were here (two were absent-Brothers Thatcher and Lund, the latter being in England,) and the Lord revealed to every one of these men-and they would bear testimony of it if they were to speak-that that was the word of the Lord to them. I never met with anything in my life in this Church that there was more unity upon than there was upon that principle. They all feel right about it, and that it is our duty. That is one principle that should be carried out from this time henceforth. "But," says one, "suppose we come along to a man who perhaps is a murderer." Well, if he is a murderer, drop him out and connect with the next man beyond him. But the Spirit of God will be with us in this matter. We want the Latter-day Saints from this time to trace their genealogies as far as they can, and to be sealed to their fathers and mothers. Have children sealed to their parents, and run this chain through as far as you can get it. * * * This is the will of the Lord to his people, and I think when you come to reflect upon it you will find it to be true.

Another principle connected with this subject I want to talk about. A man has married a woman, and they have a family of children. The man lays down in death without ever hearing the Gospel. The wife afterwards hears the Gospel and embraces it. She comes to the temple and she wants to be sealed to her husband, who was a good man. The feeling has been to deny this and to say, "No, he is not in the Church, and you cannot be sealed to your husband." Many a woman's heart has ached because of this, and as a servant of God I have broken that chain a good while ago. I have laid before every woman this principle and let her have her choice. Why deprive a woman of being sealed to her husband because he never heard the Gospel? What do any of us know with regard to him? Will he not hear the Gospel and embrace it in the spirit world? Look at Joseph Smith. Not one of Joseph Smith's fathers or brothers or sisters were in the covenant when he received the keys of the kingdom of God and translated the Book of Mormon. They afterwards received it. Every brother and sister that he had, and his father and his father's brothers, except Uncle Jesse Smith, embraced the Gospel. Now, suppose that any of these had died before they had the opportunity of entering into the covenant with the Lord through the Gospel, as his brother Alvin did; they would have been in the same position as Alvin, concerning whom the Lord, when Joseph saw him in the celestial kingdom, said: "All who have died without a knowledge of this Gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God; also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom, for I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts."

So it will be with your fathers. There will be very few, if any, who will not accept the Gospel. Jesus while His body lay in the tomb, went and preached to the spirits in prison, who were destroyed in the days of Noah. After so long an imprisonment, in torment, they doubtless gladly embraced the Gospel, and if so they will be saved in the kingdom of God. The fathers of this people will embrace the Gospel. It is my duty to honor my father who begot me in the flesh. It is your duty to do the same. When you do this, the Spirit of God will be with you. And we shall continue this work, the Lord adding light to that which we have already received. I have had friends adopted to me. We all have, more or less. But I have had peculiar feelings about it, especially lately. There are men in this congregation who wish to be adopted to me. I say to them, if they can hear me, Go and be adopted to your fathers, and save your fathers, and stand at the head of your father's house, as saviors upon Mount Zion and God will bless you in this. This is what I want to say, and what I want carried out in our temples.

The Almighty is with this people. We shall have all the revelations that we will need, if we will do our duty and obey the commandments of God. When any of us get so that we cannot receive these revelations, the Lord will take us out of the way and put someone in our places who can. I am here today, on borrowed time, I may say. I would have been in the spirit world today, mingling with the spirits in the presence of God, had it not been for the cry of this people for my life when I lay at the gates of death a year ago. I have been preserved by the power of God. How long I shall live I do not know. It does not make any difference to me. But while I do live I want to do my duty. I want the Latter-day Saints to do their duty. Here is the Holy Priesthood in these mountains. Their responsibility is great and mighty. The eyes of God and all the holy prophets are watching us. This is the great dispensation that has been spoken of ever since the world began. We are gathered together in these mountains of Israel by the power and commandment of God. We are doing the work of God. This is not our home, as far as mortality is concerned. We shall soon pass away. But while here let us fill our mission. I want to say to Brother L. Snow, Brother M. W. Merrill, Brother J. D. T. McAllister and Brother D. H. Cannon, and all associated with you, carry these things before the Lord and see for yourselves. If you are not satisfied with this order of things, go and ask the Lord about it, and the Holy Ghost will reveal to you the truth of these principles.

This is all I ought to say at this time, perhaps upon this subject. I am glad to meet with you. I have had a great anxiety, over this matter. I have had a great desire that I might live to deliver these principles to the Latter-day Saints, for they are true. They are one step forward in the work of the ministry and in the work of the endowment in these temples of our God. * * * A man may say: "I am an Apostle, or I am a High Priest, or I am an Elder in Israel, and if I am adopted to my father, will it take any honor from me." I would say not. If Joseph Smith was sealed to his father, with whom many of you were acquainted, what effect will that have upon his exaltation and glory? None at all. Joseph Smith will hold the keys of this dispensation to the endless ages of eternity. It is the greatest dispensation God ever gave to man, and he was ordained before the world was to stand in the flesh and organize this work. He was martyred for the word of God and testimony of Jesus, and when he comes in the clouds of heaven he will wear a martyr's crown. Those of you who stand here-I do not care whether you are apostles or what you are-by honoring your father you will not take any honor from your heads; you will hold the keys of the salvation of your father's house, as Joseph Smith does. You will lose nothing by honoring your fathers and redeeming your dead. It is a glorious work.

When I returned from England in 1841 and heard Joseph Smith give this revelation, that we had power to redeem our dead, one of the first things I thought was, "I have a mother in the spirit world." My father was in the flesh. I baptized and ordained him and brought him up to Zion, where he is buried. But I never saw my mother to know her. She died when I was an infant. I had power to seal my mother to my father. Was that not a satisfaction? It was to me. I have gone to work with the assistance of my friends and redeemed my father's and my mother's house. When I went to inquire of the Lord how I could redeem my dead, while I was in St. George, not having any of my family there, the Lord told me to call upon the Saints in St. George and let them officiate for me in that temple, and it should be acceptable unto Him. Brother McAllister and the brethren and sisters there have assisted me in this work, and I felt to bless them with every feeling of my heart. This is a revelation to us. We can help one another in these matters, if we have not relatives sufficient to carry this on, and it will be acceptable unto the Lord.

Brethren and sisters, lay these things to heart. Let us go on with our records, fill them up righteously before the Lord, and carry out this principle, and the blessings of God will attend us, and those who are redeemed will bless us in days to come. I pray God that as a people our eyes may be opened to see, our ears to hear, and our hearts to understand the great and mighty work that rests upon our shoulders, and that the God of heaven requires at our hand. Great and glorious are these principles which God has revealed to us concerning the redemption of our dead. I tell you when the prophets and apostles go to preach to those who are shut up in prison, and who have not received the Gospel, thousands of them will there embrace the Gospel. They know more in that world than they do here. I pray God that as a people we may have power to magnify our calling in this great and mighty dispensation while we dwell in the flesh that when our work is done we may be satisfied with this life and this work. This is my prayer and the desire of my heart, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. {1894-April 18-The Utah Genealogical and} (1)

[Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith to Lorenzo Snow, Aug. 31, 1894] As a result of the conference of the brethren engaged as ordinance workers in the several Temples, held at Salt Lake Temple, some time ago, the following slight corrections have been adopted by us, which you will please note: In the creation on the fifth day a grammatical error occurs. The word "their" is used instead of "its"; the word "their," therefore, is change[d] to its. In the lecture the words "next room" are used in the Terrestrial room when that same room is referred to; the words "the next" therefore have been changed to "this," as the appropriate form. In the placing of the girdle [sash], it should be placed on the outside of the apron strings. In the ceremonies at the veil, the practice has been to use the words, "this man Adam," while in the Logan Temple the words, "this man, representing Adam," are used. It was decided to drop the words, "this man representing," and say "Adam, &c." The word "christian," referred to in the lecture, in connection with [a person's given] name, is dropped and the word "given" is substituted. The words "and some have to go away on business," which occur at the end of the lecture, were expunged. The words, "new name," were substituted for the pronoun "it," to avoid ambiguity, where it reads in the lecture, "You must remember it," that is, your new name. The people, when being put under covenant, should signify their assent by bowing and saying, "yes." It was left optional with the Temple President to use persons as witnesses who were receiving endowments or to use workers as such. * It has been the practice to mark the shirt, but we think this unnecessary as it is not strictly a part of the Temple clothing. The marking of the garment should be done in the washing room and not at the veil; and the greatest care should be taken to see that no person is permitted to leave that room wearing an unmarked garment. In the Salt Lake Temple the practice in the Garden is for the couple at the altar to remain kneeling while the covenant relating to the * Aaronic Priesthood is being administered, while the practice in the other Temples is for the couple to arise. The reason given by the Salt Lake Temple for not arising is that the couple would have to descend three steps, and as a matter of convenience they were permitted to remain on their knees. It was decided that the couples should rise. (2)

Lorenzo Snow, October 1893

-- During October 1893
Lorenzo Snow told faithful parents that "if you succeed in passing through these trials and afflictions and receive a resurrection, you will, by the power of the Priesthood, work and labor, as the Son of God has, until you get all your sons and daughters in the path of exaltation and glory. This is just as sure as that the sun rose this morning over yonder mountains." Lorenzo Snow, "Preaching the Gospel in the Spirit World," (1)

-- Nov 15, 1893
[Book of Temple Ordinances, Nov. 15, 1893; p. 16; copy in Buerger Papers] On Wednesday Nov. 15th 1893 Presidents [Wilford] Woodruff and [George Q.] Cannon, at their office, in answer to the question put to them by Pres[iden]t Lorenzo Snow[,] made the following ruling. "In cases where the heads of families deceased have had the necessary ordinance work done for them and they have been adopted into a family whose relationship in the covenant connects with the Prophet Joseph [Smith], the children of such parents can be sealed to the latter. This decision includes children who are in the Church and parents were not." (2)

-- During 1893
President of the Salt Lake Temple 1893 (3)

[Lorenzo Snow] He traveled to Hawaii and Israel on church business; and he presented England's Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with copies of the Book of Mormon, receiving in return their autographs, which he cherished for life. At age seventy-two Snow was sentenced to a prison term for practicing polygamy. In prison he taught classes in reading, writing, mathematics, and bookkeeping during his one-year term. In 1893 he was named the first president of the Salt Lake Temple. (4)

The Directors of the [Mexican] Colonization Co. met and passed upon the reports of McDonald & Eyring and endorsed their recommendations. M. Thatcher, B. Young, Geo. Teasdale and H. Eyring were chosen a committee to pass upon character of Title to go to the Colonists. (1)

First counselor George Q. Cannon "holds that [apostolic] seniority rests with Apostles who have not been of the Twelve as well as the Twelve." Second counselor Joseph F. Smith disagrees. By Cannon's definition, John W. Young outranks both Cannon and Smith. This would make Young the church's presiding apostle after President Snow's death in 1901, even though Young has never been a member of the Twelve. Lorenzo Snow rules in 1900 that apostolic ranking is by entry into Twelve and not by ordination date as apostle. This ends Young's hopes. (2)

Lorenzo Snow, Wed., Jun 7, 1893

-- Wed., Jun 7, 1893
[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] At 5 o'clock I went to the Temple where I met my folks, we having received permission from Pres. Woodruff to receive our second anointings. Father was there to perform the ceremony. Bro. Lyman was also there to be with his wife Susan D. Callister Lyman as she received this blessing. Father anointed and spoke the words, John D. T. McAllister held the horn, and Lorenzo Snow and John R. Winder were the witnesses. Sister Lyman was first anointed in the presence of us all, she thus being the first to receive this blessing in this building. I then received mine, and my wives followed in the order of their marriages. I felt very much pleased to be thus favored. The ordinance of the washing of feet was explained by Bro. McAllister, after the annointings had been given. I went to the President's office and spent a short time with Father talking about business, and then took John Q. to his home before I went to my home. (1)

-- Jun 23, 1893
[President Wilford Woodruff Journal] 23 Friday I spent the day in the Office Except I met with President Snow & the Twelve in the Temple. Prest Snow talked to the workers. I followed him & talked plain & gave my views what ought to be done in the Temple & how work should be done. (2)

-- Jul 12, 1893
[Apostle Marriner W. Merrill Diary] Wednesday. At a Quorum meeting in the Salt Lake Temple today President Woodruff and President Joseph F. Smith, after Temple ordinance matters were discussed, ruled that the Endowment House and St. George Temple practices should prevail in all the Temples, viz., that those persons, male or female, who had not been sealed for themselves could represent the dead in being sealed for them. I demurred against the ruling as I do not think it right, but will adopt it in the Logan Temple on the responsibility of the Presidency. It was moved by President Joseph F. Smith and carried unanimously that Lorenzo Snow and M. W. Merrill, Presidents of the Salt Lake and Logan Temples, should be the judges and decide whether women in the Church having husbands deceased out of the Church should be sealed to said husbands. After the meeting adjourned I went to the depot and took train at 6:30 for Ogden, where I stayed over night with Brother David Eccles. Went to the opera house with him and enjoyed a good play by an Eastern troupe. (3)

Lorenzo Snow, Monday, Apr 3, 1893

[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

Lorenzo Snow, Franklin D. Richards, Brigham Young, F. M. Lyman, George Teasdale, John W. Taylor, M. W. Merrill, A. H. Lund, A. H. Cannon and myself met in Council.

Bros. Lyman and Taylor reported a visit to Bro. M. Thatcher and said he did not receive them kindly but exhibited a bad spirit. (1)

-- Apr 3, 1893
[Apostle Marriner W. Merrill Diary] Monday. I went to Salt Lake on Conference train, arrived in S. L. at 12:10. Sarah, Cyrene, Aunt Lib, Sophia, Amos, Lorin, and Ezra came also. Went to meeting of Quorum at 2 p. m. when Apostle Moses Thatcher's case was again discussed, F. M. Lyman and John W. Taylor having visited him since our last meeting. They reported him as being very defiant and justifying himself in his course, and treating them in a very discourteous manner while at his house. President Snow was very pronounced against Brother Thatcher's course. Meeting adjourned at 5 p. m. to meet in Conference at 10 a. m. tomorrow. (2)

Salt Lake Temple, forty years in construction, dedicated by President Wilford Woodruff. (3)

-- Apr 6, 1893
Wilford Woodruff dedicated Salt Lake temple, forty years after its cornerstone-laying [twice the time it took to build the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt]. It is largest LDS temple ever build, with 253,105 square feet of floor space. Joseph F. Smith "sobbed & wept like a child" as he gives talk that day. Some see halos of light around first counselor George Q. Cannon and around Apostles Lorenzo Snow, John W. Taylor, and Heber J. Grant. Not everyone present sees these manifestations, and future apostle James E. Talmage notes: "There were no strange or bewildering manifestations of 'supernatural' agencies during the service: but the power of God was there, and the entire assembly felt it." (4)

Lorenzo Snow, Tuesday, Mar 14, 1893

-- Tuesday, Mar 14, 1893
[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Salt Lake City

Presidents W. Woodruff, Jos. F. Smith, Lorenzo Snow, F. D. Richards, Brigham Young, Moses Thatcher, Francis M. Lyman, J. W. Taylor, A. H. Lund, A. H. Cannon and myself met in Council. Prest. W. Woodruff stated to the brethren that his feeling[s] were that we must not be to stringent as to who among our people should attend the dedication services but that all who held any kind of a standing should go through the Temple and look at the building. (1)

-- Mar 23, 1893
[Francis M. Lyman] Met with our quorum at 10 A.M. Pres[ident] Lorenzo Snow presiding Present Pres[iden]ts W[ilford]. Woodruff, Geo[rge] Q. Cannon, Jos[eph] F Smith and Lorenzo Snow; also elder [Franklin D.] Richards, [Brigham] Young [Jr.], [Francis M.] Lyman [John Henry] Smith, [George] Teasdale, [John W.] Taylor, [Marriner Wood] Merrill, [Anthon H.] Lund and Abra[ha]m H. Cannon. We met fasting. The brethren all gave expression of their faith in the Presidency and in each other. The testimony and spirit manifested by each were all that could be asked for and brought tears frequently to Pres[ident] Woodruff s eyes. He finally with difficulty restrained his feelings sufficiently total with much power and the demonstration of the Spirit of Truth. He said not one of us present 13 in number would ever fall away from the Truth. Our subject was chiefly the case of bro[ther] Moses Thatcher which we all saw had been radically wrong. It was concluded he must be brought to see that he had been working against the policy of the Presidency, thus heading a faction against the Presidency and bringing them to disgrace in the eyes of the Saints. It was concluded we could not go in to the dedication of the Temple with him unless he could thus see his course and repent of it. That is the only thing that separates our quorum. We all see his error. He was taken so very sick last night that he was compelled to go home this morning, which we all deeply regretted. It was concluded also that a labor must be taken up with bro[ther] B. H. Roberts and Cha[rle]s W. Penrose in regard to their course in opposition to the counsel of the First Presidency. The First Counsel of the Seventy shall handle Elder Roberts and Pres[ident] A[ngus]. M. Cannon and Jos[eph] E. Taylor will take up a labor with Bro[ther] Penrose. Pres[ident] Lorenzo Snow will with others of our quorum take up a labor with bro[ther] Moses and try to open his eyes. Pres[ident] Jos[eph] F Smith and I were charged to explain to the Seventies and to Pres[ident] Cannon and Taylor what their labors would be. All felt merciful towards these brethren but felt they should be brought to see their danger and the wrong they have done. (2)

-- Jan 11, 1893
[Apostle Marriner W. Merrill Diary] We met at 10 a. m. Brother Lund was mouth in prayer. Several talked, and I talked 15 minutes. President Snow referred to Moses Thatcher's recent course in not being in harmony with the First Presidency. Then Moses talked and was much agitated and affected and felt humble. At 1 p. m. President Cannon came in and it was decided that the Quorum meet with the First Presidency tomorrow at 11 a. m. and talk over and adjust the feelings with Brother Thatcher and First Presidency. It was also decided to meet again as a Quorum on Tuesday, March 21st, in the Salt Lake Temple in a room set apart for the Twelve. It was decided that the Twelve furnish their own room, which would probably cost $2,000.00. The Twelve then went to the Temple and viewed it all through. I then came to my room tired and sick after fasting all day. (1)

-- Jan 29, 1893
[Francis M. At that time we shall continue our meetings together from day to day as long as it shall be considered necessary to fully prepare ourselves for our labors at the dedication of the Temple on April 6, 1893 ... It will be a joyful time to see all our quorum together again. (2)

Presidents W. Woodruff, G. Q.. Cannon, Jos. F. Smith, Lorenzo Snow, F. M. Lyman, Heber J. Grant and A. H. Cannon and myself met and agreed to get rid of our lawyers. (3)

-- Dec 16, 1892
[James E. Talmage] On the train en route to Ogden, I had a long and interesting conversation with Apostle Lorenzo Snow, President of the Quorum of the Twelve. He spoke to me at length concerning the Church School Cause, and encouraged me in my labors in the same. Then, taking me by the hand, he pronounced over me words of counsel, and blessing, and that too by the spirit of prophecy; for so he declared to me; and so the testimony in my own heart bore record. As soon as possible,-within a quarter of an hour after the interview closed, I wrote down, as fully as I could remember, the sentiments he expressed. Said he, "I do not know exactly why, but I feel, and have always felt a deep interest in you. I want you to feel encouraged in your labors; and to cultivate a love for life and a desire to live, for I tell you, you shall live till you are satisfied with life; and if you so desire till you are a very old man. You shall attain to the very highest pinnacle of fame, that your heart may aspire toward; and you shall reach a position which very few men in the church will attain. The Lord has wondrously blessed you; you are endowed with talents many and great,-endowments for which many men would give a fortune of millions of dollars; and if you will continue to cultivate a spirit of humility, and fail not to give to God the glory for your successes, achieved through His favor, you shall be blessed of God, more and more; and your heart shall be filled with blessings indescribable.

You are called to fulfill a mission of rare and great importance in the Church, and the Lord will assist you".

I was deeply affected at his words; and I asked of him as a favor to offer criticism and instruction whenever he saw me wandering from the track of the Gospel, for I have seen so many men, highly favored of God, fall away through pride and arrogance. To this President Snow replied,-"Brother Talmage, I will do so, but I prophecy to you, as Joseph Smith prophesied to me once,-though your weaknesses may be many, and your failings not a few, yet the Lord will not permit you to live to wander entirely from the path of right. God bless you, and you shall be blessed".

Oh! how can my heart contain the blessings of my Father! God grant me power to live for them and to resist the temptations that come in my path. (4)
